U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team Skates Past Slovakia, 12-0, at 2009 IIHF World Under-18 Championship

FARGO, N.D. – Ten different players recorded multi-point efforts as the U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team downed Slovakia, 12-0, in its third game at the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-18 Championship here tonight. Team USA owns a 3-0-0-0 record in the tournament and currently sits in first place in Group B.

Kevin Lynch (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) opened the scoring for Team USA at 12:57 of the first frame when he took a long pass from Philip Samuelsson(Scottsdale, Ariz.), streaked into the zone all alone and slid a backhanded shot under netminder Tomas Peck. Lynch doubled the U.S. advantage 1:47 later after he followedJeremy Morin's (Auburn, N.Y.) rebound and chipped it past Pek.David Valek (Orem, Utah) made it 3-0 when Chris Brown's (Flower Mound, Texas) rebound popped out to the middle slot where Valek one touched it inside the right post at 16:14.

Matthew Nieto (Long Beach, Calif.) kicked off the second period scoring barrage after he picked the third rebound left by Pek and chipped it into the net at 5:41. At the midway point of the frame, John Henrion (Holden, Mass.) streaked down the left wing, made his way around a Slovakian defender and lifted a backhanded shot up and over Pek, who was relieved after the goal by new netminder Juraj Holly. Just 3:14 later, Nick Mattson(Chanhassen, Minn.) one-timed Ryan Bourque's (Boxford, Mass.) pass from the left point off of Holly's glove and in for a power-play marker. Kenny Ryan (Franklin Village, Mich.) struck again on the power play to make it 7-0 when Jon Merrill's (Brighton, Mich.) long pass found Ryan who skated up the middle all alone, deked to his backhand and roofed the puck at 17:32.

In the third stanza, Team USA got goals from Ryan at 3:47, Henrion at 6:35, Brown at 7:46 and Brendan Rempel (Willington, Conn.) at 8:41 to make it 11-0 before the before the half-way mark. Morin tallied an unassisted goal at 17:59 to cap the scoring at 12-0.

Netminder Jack Campbell (Port Huron, Mich.) recorded 18 saves to earn the shutout victory.

The U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team will meet Russia tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. CT at the Urban Plains Center in Fargo. With a win, Team USA will clinch first place in Group B and will earn a bye into the semifinals.

Team USA has outscored its opponents 24-3 in its three games at the IIHF World Under-18 Championship ... Jack Campbell now has four shutouts against international competition in 2008-09 ... The U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team has earned a medal in each of the last five IIHF World Under-18 Championships, including the gold (2005, 2006), silver (2004, 2007) and the bronze (2008).
