Five different players notch goals in shutout over Finland

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Molly Schaus (Natick, Mass.) stopped all 14 shots she faced, and five different players scored to lead the U.S. Women’s National Team to a 5-0 victory over Finland in its opening game today in the 2014 Four Nations Cup.

Team USA played a strong first period, outshooting Finland, 12-3, and creating three power play chances. The only goal of the opening stanza, however, came even strength at 8:16 when Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) tucked the puck past Finnish netminder Evaliina Suonpaa after a nice up-ice pass from Shiann Darkangelo (Brighton, Mich./Quinnipiac University).

The U.S. scored twice in the middle frame. Haley Skarupa (Rockville, Md./Boston College) tapped in a goalmouth pass from Dani Cameranesi (Plymouth, Minn./University of Minnesota) at 8:36 to make it 2-0. Then, with just 3:14 left in the period, Hannah Brandt (Vandais Heights, Minn./University of Minnesota) corralled the puck low in the left circle and passed back across the slot to a rushing Camernesi, who found the top corner of the net for a 3-0 advantage.

Almost 11 minutes into the third period, the U.S. upped its lead when Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.) intercepted a Finland breakout pass and found Emily Pfalzer (Getzville, N.Y./Boston College), who walked in and beat Suonpaa high to the glove side. Monique Lamoureux (Grand Forks, N.D.) capped the scoring after she picked up the puck in her own end, rushed up the left wing, went backhand to forehand and flipped the puck into the back of the net.

Team USA outshot Finland, 40-14. The U.S. was 1-6 on the power play, while holding Finland scoreless in three tries.

The U.S. is back in action tomorrow (Nov. 5) against host Canada. Opening faceoff is set for 10 p.m. ET, and the game can been seen live on
