Halverson Gains Shutout in Team USA Debut; Larkin Tallies Three Points

MONTREAL — Brandon Halverson (Traverse City, Mich./Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds) stopped all 14 shots he faced, while Dylan Larkin (Waterford, Mich./University of Michigan) notched a pair of goals to lead the U.S. National Junior Team to a 6-0 victory over Germany in its second game of the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship.

“I thought we played a real good hockey game,” said Mark Osiecki, head coach of the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team. “We were a bit sloppy in the first period, but came out in the second and third periods and played much better.”

Auston Matthews (Scottsdale, Ariz./U.S. National Under-18 Team) gave the U.S. the 1-0 lead on a wraparound chance at 4:44 of the opening period.

Later, just as a power play expired, Hudson Fasching (Apple Valley, Wis./University of Minnesota) poked in his own rebound to make it 2-0 at 12:30.

Just 2:48 into the second period, with the teams playing four-aside, Sonny Milano (Massapequa, N.Y./Plymouth Whalers) and Will Butcher (Sun Prairie, Wis./University of Denver) created a two-on-one rush, and Milano put one into the top corner of the net, blocker side for a 3-0 advantage.

Then at 15:04, Larkin skated hard to the net and scored on the backhand to give the U.S. a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes.

With 5:51 left in regulation, captain Jack Eichel (North Chelmsford, Mass./Boston University) rushed down the slot, skated all the way around the net and tucked the puck in the near corner for the fifth U.S. goal. Larkin finished the scoring with 20 seconds remaining when he put one in from the side of the net.

Team USA is back in action tomorrow (Dec. 29) against Slovakia. Puck drop is 4 p.m. ET, and the game can be seen live on NHL Network and NHL.com.
