U.S. Women's National Univ. Team Blanks Spain, 9-0

Team USA Wins Relegation Pool and Places Fifth in Final Winter World Univesity Games Standings

GRANADA, Spain—Kristen Levesque (Sandwich, Mass./University of Rhode Island) opened the scoring with two goals to help spark the offense, spurring Team USA to topple host-country Spain, 9-0, in its 2015 Winter World University Games finale today at Mulhacen Pavilion. Caleigh LaBossiere (Acton, Mass./University of Massachusetts) also tallied a pair of goals in today’s contest. With the victory, the United States won the relegation pool and placed fifth in final tournament standings.

In the opening period, Levesque notched two tallies 4:17 apart to as Team USA jumped out to a 2-0 advantage. Just 1:35 into the second stanza, Levesque’s linemate, Emily Ford (Glastonbury, Conn./University of Vermont), netted the third U.S. goal. Kaley Mooney (Pittsburgh, Pa./Miami University) and Katie Augustine (West Chester, Ohio/Miami University) also picked up goals to extend Team USA’s lead to 5-0. Then, with two seconds on the clock, LaBossiere picked up her first marker of the game, giving the U.S. a 6-0 lead heading into the third period.

In the final frame, Amanda Abromson (Braintree, Mass./University of Massachusetts) scored just under six minutes into the period to make it 7-0. LaBossiere notched her second tally at 16:33 of the period, and Eleanor Chalifoux (Beverly Hills, Mich./University of Michigan) scored in the final 43 seconds for the 9-0 final count.

U.S. goaltenders Maria Barlow (Howell, Mich./Michigan State University) and Caitlin Nosanov (Middleville, Mich./Devenport University) played in tonight’s contest. Nosanov stopped all five shots she faced in the first 29:53 of the contest, while Barlow stopped 11 of 11 shots in the final 30:07 of play.

The U.S. Women’s National University Team placed fifth in the final tournament standings and won the relegation pool (1-1-0-0; W-OTW-OTL-L), beating Kazakhstan (3-2, SO) and Spain.

Notes: Caleigh LaBossiere is second among defenseman in tournament scoring with four points (3-1—4). Goaltenders Caitlin Nosanov (92.21) and Maria Barlow (91.89) are third and fourth, respectively, among goaltenders in save percentage. Kaley Mooney is fourth in goal scoring for the tournament with four.
