USA White Tops Finland, 8-2; USA Blue Edges Sweden, 6-4

Kieffer Bellows (Edina, Minn.) tallied five points to lead USA White past Finland, 8-2, in today's second game of the day at USA Hockey’s National Junior Evaluation Camp at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan. Jeremy Bracco (Freeport, N.Y.) and Tage Thompson (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) each scored twice as USA Blue edged Sweden, 6-4, in the day’s earlier tilt.



RECAP: USA WHITE 8, Finland 2

Finland opened the scoring 7:06 into the first period when Julius Nattinen fired a slap shot past Joseph Woll (St. Louis, Mo.). Eeli Tolvanen extended Finland’s lead to 2-0 with 5:39 remaining when he finished a pass from Kasper Bjorkqvist.

USA White cut Finland’s lead to one when Bellows finished a 2-on-1 pass from Casey Mittelstadt (Eden Prairie, Minn.) with two minutes remaining in the period.

Casey Fitzgerald (North Reading, Mass.) evened the game just :33 into the middle frame when his slap shot from the top of the circle beat Finland’s Veini Vehvillainen while on the power play. Keller and Bellows were credited with assists on the play.

Two minutes later, Keller gave USA White a 3-2 lead when he skated through Finland’s defenders and lifted a backhander over Vehvillainen’s pad. The play started when Bellows took a pass from Adam Fox (Jericho, N.Y.) and found Keller at the top of blue line where he curled in and skated in on goal alone for the breakaway goal.

USA White extended its lead to 4-2 when Kailer Yamamoto (Spokane, Wash.) wrapped in a loose puck with 6:48 left in the period. Jack Ahcan (Savage, Minn.) gave USA White a three goal lead just 3:13 later when he slid his own rebound past Veihvillainen.

Troy Terry (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) made is 6-2 just 2:03 into the final frame by banging in his own rebound to the right of the crease.

Bellows added his second tally of the game with 6:54 remaining in the game when he batted home a pass from Yamamoto. Brock Boeser (Burnsville, Minn.) connected 1:20 later to account for the 8-2 final.

Woll stopped 13 shots in 33:12 minutes of play while Tyler Parsons (Chesterfield, Mich.) stopped all five shots he faced over 24:36 minutes of action.

RECAP: USA Blue 6, Sweden 4

Sweden opened the scoring 7:55 into the opening frame when David Bernhardt’s shot beat goaltender Jake Oettinger (Lakeville, Minn.). Five minutes later, Andreas Wingerli’s shorthanded snap shot from the slot extended Sweden’s lead to 2-0.

On the power play, Tom Novak (River Falls, Wis.) gave USA Blue its first goal of the game just :35 into the middle frame with Charlie McAvoy (Long Beach, N.Y.) and Chad Krys (Ridgefield, Conn.) registering assists on the play. 

With 7:26 remaining in the period, Jordan Greenway (Potsdam, N.Y.) picked up a loose puck in the slot and fired a shot beneath the crossbar to even game at 2-2. Just four minutes later, Bracco gave USA Blue its first lead of the game when he swiped in a puck that trickled past Sweden goaltender Adam Werner.

Sweden evened the score 6:45 into the final stanza when Rasmus Asplund fired home a pass from Gustav Bouramman. USA Blue regained the lead just :24 later when Bracco collected his second goal of the game off a pass from Alex DeBrincat (Farmington Hills, Mich.). 

With 6:17 remaining in the game, Thompson gave USA Blue a 2-0 lead when he finished a passing play from Brendan Warren (Carleton, Mich.) and Luke Kunin (Chesterfield, Mo.).

Sweden cut USA Blue’s back to one just 40 seconds later when Jonathan Dahlen tucked a wrist shot under the crossbar.

With 13.6 remaining in the game, Thompson collected the puck deep in Sweden's zone and tapped it into the empty net to account for the 6-4 final.

Oettinger, who started for USA Blue, finished with 19 saves over 33:21 minutes of play. In relief, Evan Sarthou (Black Diamond, Wash.) collected 11 saves in 26:26 minutes of play.
