McDonagh and Oshie scored goals for Team USA

TORONTORyan McDonagh (St. Paul, Minn.) and T.J. Oshie (Warroad, Minn.) provided goals for Team USA, but it was not enough as Canada defeated Team USA by a 4-2 count here tonight in its second of three preliminary round games of the World Cup of Hockey 2016.

“We’re obviously disappointed” said John Tortorella, head coach of the U.S. World Cup of Hockey Team. “I thought we were ready to play and in the end things just didn’t go our way.”

McDonagh staked Team USA to a 1-0 lead, 4:22 into the game when he jammed a loose puck in front of the net past goaltender Carey Price.

Canada responded with goals by Matt Duchene and Corey Perry just :14 apart, at 5:51 and 6:05 of the opening period, to claim a 2-1 advantage.

Duchene sprung in alone on Quick at the 7:53 mark of the first period to increase Canada’s advantage to 3-1 after one period.

Canada extended its lead to 4-1 on a goal that was credited to Patrice Bergeron after the puck bounced off McDonagh’s skate and into the net at 8:50 of the second period.

Oshie scored during a net-front scramble with 2:32 remaining to account for the 4-2 final.

Jonathan Quick (Milford, Conn.) stopped 30 shots for the U.S.

Team USA closes preliminary-round play Thursday (Sept. 22) at 8 p.m. ET against Czech Republic. The game will be televised live in the U.S. on ESPN2, in addition to being streamed live on WatchESPN.
