AMHERST, N.Y. – With the first day of camp in the books and a night’s sleep behind them, the invitees to USA Hockey’s Boys Select 17 Camp kicked off Day 2 with a game that both teams will long remember.

They say the true test of character is how you handle adversity. Team White saw some of the most adversity a team is likely to see all week, staring down a 4-0 deficit with slightly more than 21 minutes remaining in the second half. Team Royal controlled the majority of the first half by scoring three goals, two of them 11 seconds apart early in the game and handling everything Team White threw at them in their own defensive zone.

Late in the first half, Adam Szubert (Tinley Park, Ill.) of Team White was whistled for tripping, which awarded Samuel Rhodes (Virginia Beach, Va.) a penalty shot. Goaltender Jake Mucitelli (Deerfield, N.Y.) kept the deficit at three by making a key save for Team White. But, coming back from the halftime break, it seemed like Team Royal still held the momentum as Gavin Hain (Grand Rapids, Minn.) put his team up 4-0. Then Team White showed the resilience that impressed scouts and coaches, answering with two quick tallies of their own from Matt Cameron (Berwyn, Pa.) and Kyle Haskins (Huntington, Vt.) just 16 seconds apart.

After a goal from each team, Kevin Wall (Fairport, N.Y.) scored his second goal of the game to extend Team Royal’s lead to 5-3. But Team White had other ideas about how this game would end.

Cameron eventually scored his second of the day to pull within one, then  Haskins completed the comeback with his second goal on the day with just 16 seconds to play. Team White would eventually win the shootout, 3-2.

Haskins finished the day with four points (2G, 2A) and scored the first of his team’s goals in the shootout. Haskins now has a camp-leading six points (4G, 2A).

Not to be overlooked was the play of Team Royal goaltender Isaiah Saville (Anchorage, Alaska). Saville showed poise and great rebound control, as he did not allow a goal for the second straight day. He currently has 16 saves in 50 minutes of play so far.

Shootouts seemed to be the theme of the day at camp, as all five of today’s games needed the breakaway contest to settle a winner.

Like Team White, Team Orange was able to parlay a last-minute game-tying goal into a shootout victory. Ethan Frisch (Moorhead, Minn.) showed great composure as he received a pass at the top of the faceoff circle, corralled it and snapped it far side past the glove of Team Kelly goaltender Blake Pietila (Howell, Mich.). Team Orange excelled in the shootout, going 4-for-5 and taking the victory.

In the third game, a back-and-forth tilt between Team Red and Team Columbia, we again saw a late goal take us to a shootout. James Glynn (Lemont, Ill.) pulled out some late-game heroics and tied the game at 4-4 with just under two minutes to play, but it wasn’t enough as Team Columbia recomposed to win the shootout 2-1.

On a bright note for Team Red, Sam Renlund (Verona, Wis.) scored one of the nicest goals of the camp so far when Riley Hughes (Westwood, Mass.) delivered a perfect pass over the head of a Team Columbia defender sending Renlund in on a breakaway. He finished it by scoring between the legs of Trent Burnham (Eagle River, Alaska).

Team Forest topped Team Gray 4-3 with Wyatt Schlant (Wellesley, Mass.) scoring the lone goal during the shootout. Team Black finished the day with the final shootout win, toppling Team Gold 5-4 (1-0 in the shootout).

Tomorrow’s slate of games begins at 2 p.m. Eastern Time when Team Kelly takes on Team White.
