Rooney Makes 21 Saves, U.S. to Play in Semifinals Monday (Feb. 19)

GANGNEUNG, South Korea — Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.) scored and Maddie Rooney (Andover, Minn.) made 21 saves but the U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team fell to Canada, 2-1, here tonight in its final preliminary round game at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

“We played extremely hard and put a lot of pucks to the net,” said U.S. Olympic Women's Team head coach Robb Stauber. “We outshot a great team, and at the end of the day we needed to get one more. We believe this team is ready for a breakout."

The U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team (2-0-0-1/W-OTW-OTL-L) will return to action Monday (Feb. 19) in the semifinals. Time and opponent is to be determined. The game will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network as well as streamed on NBCOlympics.com.

Team USA opened the game outshooting Canada, 7-1, in the first eight minutes of play. Its best scoring chance came at the 4:07 mark when Coyne made a stretch pass to Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) who went on a partial breakaway but was stopped by Canadian netminder Genevieve Lacasse. After 20 minutes of play, the two teams entered intermission scoreless.

Both teams traded chances in the middle stanza before Canada converted at the 7:18 mark when Meghan Agosta banged home a loose puck to the left of goal. With 5:04 remaining in the frame, Sarah Nurse pushed Canada’s lead to 2-0 when she fired a high wrist shot past Rooney’s right shoulder.

Just 1:12 later, the United States was awarded a penalty shot after a Canadian defender was called for illegally covering the puck in the crease. Jocelyne Lamoureux (Grand Forks, N.D.) skated in on goal and pulled the puck between her legs before shifting to her backhand for a shot that was blocked away by Lacasse to keep Team USA’s deficit at two.

In the final frame, the U.S. connected just 23 seconds in when Coyne carried the puck into the offensive zone, split two Canadian defenders and sent the puck between the legs of Lacasse to make it 2-1.

With 9:08 remaining in the game, a Team Canada goal was waived off due to a kicked-in call on Hayley Irwin.

In the closing minute of the game, Team USA saw a number of high quality scoring chances – including a shot off the post – nearly tie the game, but none were able to connect as time expired.
