The United States held the International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship for the first time, with Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, serving as host cities. The U.S. National Junior Team finished in sixth place with a 2-5-0 (W-L-T) record.
In addition to U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member John Vanbiesbrouck (2007 inductee) returning for his second stint with the U.S. National Junior Team, Team USA had three other future U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame members on the squad: forward Scott Fusco (2002 inductee) and defensemen Chris Chelios (2011 inductee) and Phil Housley (2004 inductee).
