2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games

The U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team will be one of 12 teams competing at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games between February 14-25, 2018.

Tony Granato, the current head men’s hockey coach at the University of Wisconsin, will be the head coach of Team USA. Granato will be joined by assistant coaches Keith Allain, Chris Chelios, Ron Rolston and Scott Young. In addition, Jim Johannson, USA Hockey’s assistant executive director of hockey operations, will be the team’s general manager, and Ben Smith will serve as director of player personnel. Team USA’s final 25-player roster will be comprised of college players, American Hockey Leaguers, and Americans playing professionally in Europe. Before the Games, the U.S. will compete at the Deutschland Cup in Augsburg, Germany, from November 10-12, as part of the player evaluation and selection process, with the Olympic coaching and management staff guiding the U.S. efforts in that event.

Competition Groups

Twelve teams will compete for Olympic Gold, Silver and Bronze at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games.

Each team will play three round robin games with teams in their group. There will be four qualification playoff games, four quarterfinal games, two semifinal games, one bronze medal game and one gold medal game.

Game Format

Each game will have three 20-minute periods with two 15-minute intermissions. The rink is roughly 200 feet long by 98 feet wide. This is around ten feet wider than NHL rinks.

Overtime:

For preliminary round games and qualification round games, the overtime will start with a five-minute sudden death period. If no winner is decided in overtime, a three-round shootout will be used. After the three-rounds, any skater can take the shot.

For the quarterfinals, the semifinals and the bronze medal game, the overtime will start with a ten-minute sudden death period. If no winner is decided in overtime, a three-round shootout will be used. After the three-rounds, any skater can take the shot.

For the gold medal game, the overtime will start with a twenty-minute sudden death period. If no winner is decided in overtime, a three-round shootout will be used. After the three-rounds, any skater can take the shot.


Venues

Gangneung Hockey Centre and Kwandong Hockey Centre will host all hockey games at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games. The arenas are located in the Gangneung Coastal Cluster.
