Dr. Joel Boyd | 4 Nations Face-Off

Dr. Joel Boyd, MD, long-time orthopedic surgeon for the NHL's Minnesota Wild, is set to serve the team physician for the U.S. Men's National Team at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off.

The St. Paul, Minn., previously served as a team physician for the U.S. Men's Olympic Team at the 1998 Winter Olympics. He would gain further experience with Team USA as a team physician for the U.S. Men's National Team at the 1998 IIHF Men's World Championship.

Boyd has spent over two decades as a team physician for the Wild, a position he began during the team's inaugural season in 2000. When hired, he became the first Black team physician in NHL history.

Growing up in Washington, D.C., he was inspired to become a hockey fan watching Mike Marson, the second Black player to play in the NHL, suit up for his hometown Washington Capitals.

Prior to his NHL experience, Boyd served as a fellow at the University of Western Ontario, where he provided care for the OHL's London Knights and the university's men's hockey team. He also served as medical director for the Minnesota State High School League for over a decade, gaining further experience in the sport as a central figure for the Minnesota high school boys state hockey tournament.
