2025 MWC | Mike Vellucci

Mike Vellucci, assistant coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL, will serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. Men's National Team at the 2025 IIHF Men's World Championship.

A coaching veteran of 29 years at the NHL, AHL, OHL and NAHL levels, Vellucci has served in his current role of assistant coach of the Penguins since the 2020-21 season. Prior to this, he served as the general manager and head coach for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins for one season.

Vellucci spent five seasons (2014-19) as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes organization. He held numerous roles with the Hurricanes, including assistant general manager, director of hockey operations and head coach of the club's AHL affiliate, the Charlotte Checkers. Under his leadership, the Checkers won the 2019 Calder Cup and Vellucci was named AHL Coach of the Year.

Prior to his tenure with Carolina, Vellucci held the role of general manager and head coach of the OHL's Plymouth Whalers for 13 seasons (2001-14). He ascended to the role of team president for the 2013-14 season.

Vellucci's coaching career began in the NAHL with the Compuware Ambassadors (1994-1999). He amassed a record of 241–82–27 (W-L-T) in the regular season with the club.

As a player, Vellucci was drafted 131st overall by the Hartford Whalers in the 1984 NHL Draft. He would go on to play in numerous minor leagues and appeared in two NHL contests for the Whalers in the 1987-88 season.
