Competition at the 2016 USA Hockey National Junior Evaluation Camp at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan, begins tonight as USA Blue and USA White face each other in an intrasquad scrimmage at 5 p.m. ET.
Tonight's scrimmage will be the first time Bob Motzko (St. Cloud, Minn.), head coach of the 2017 U.S. National Junior Team, and his staff will assess the players in a game setting during camp.
Both USA Blue and USA White took the ice for the first time this morning. USA Blue, led by associate coaches Grant Potulny (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Mike Knuble (East Grand Rapids, Mich.), took the ice at 9 a.m. while associate coaches Greg Brown (Scituate, Mass.) and Ron Rolson (Fenton, Mich.) oversaw USA White's practice at 10 a.m.
Upon returning to the hotel, several players took part in interviews where players discussed their experiences participating in Toyota USA Hockey's Youth National Championships. In addition, Charlie McAvoy (Long Beach, N.Y.) conducted a brief Q&A Session with fellow 2016 U.S. National Junior Team bronze medalist Matthew Tkachuk (St. Louis, Mo.).
USA White edged USA Blue, 1-0, in a 20-minute scrimmage here tonight at USA Hockey's National Junior Evaluation Camp at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan.
Both teams traded chances in the opening minutes before Rem Pitlick (Plymouth, Minn.) tucked a loose puck at the left post past goaltender Jake Oettinger (Lakeville, Minn.) for the game's lone goal just before the midway point of the scrimmage.
With four minutes remaining, Clayton Keller (Swansea, Ill.) collected a loose puck along the wall and skated in alone for a breakaway opportunity that was stopped by Evan Sarthou (Black Diamond, Wash.).
Brock Boeser (Burnsville, Minn.) nearly gave USA White a 2-0 advantage in the final seconds but his one-timer from Keller was turned aside.
Following a cleaning of the ice, the two teams returned to the ice where they conducted power play and penalty kill drills.
