KRASNOYARSK, Russia – Jazmin Malinowski (New Lenox, Ill./McKendree University) made 19 saves on 21 shots as the U.S. Women’s National University Team (1-0-0-1/W-OTW-OTL-L) defeated Switzerland, 5-2, in its second game at the 2019 Winter World University Games.
Team USA got on the board first in the opening stanza when Maeve Reilly (Ridgefield, Conn./College of the Holy Cross) found the back of the net at the 6:24 mark.
The U.S. doubled its lead to 2-0 with 2:14 remaining in the first period when Lauren McDonald (Rochester, Minn./Liberty University) beat the Swiss goaltender for her first goal of the tournament.
After one period, the U.S. held a 25-3 shot advantage and went into the intermission leading by two.
Team USA continued to fire shots on net and apply pressure to start the second period.
The U.S. would break through once again and make the score 3-0 with 9:30 remaining in the stanza.
Jaiden Forrest (Grand Rapids, Mich./Davenport University) found the back of the net for Team USA, her first goal of the tournament, to put her team up by three.
The U.S. continued to generate chances and would capitalize again shortly after the Forrest goal when Maddie Wolsmann (Maple Grove, Minn./Michigan State University), a 2017 U.S. National University Select Team member, scored her first goal of this year's tournament.
After outshooting Switzerland, 19-11, in the second period, Team USA came out in the third with the same kind of urgency.
Just 1:44 into the period, Allison Carlson (Marquette, Mich./Grand Valley State University) scored in her second consecutive game to give the U.S. a 5-0 lead.
Switzerland added two goals of its own in the third period, as the U.S. skated away with a 5-2 victory.
