U.S. Men's Nat'l Univ. Team Falls to Russia, 3-2

Men's team returns to action on Thursday against Slovakia

KRASNOYARSK, Russia  Dominic Moore (Woodhave, Mich./Adrian College) and Trace Jablin (St. Louis, Mo./University of Colorado) scoed back-to-back goals 1:20 apart, but the U.S. Men’s National University Team (1-0-0-2/W-OTW-OTL-L) fell to Russia, 3-2, in its third game at the 2019 Winter World University Games.

The teams traded chances in the first period, with Russia recording 11 shots and Team USA firing nine shots on goal.

Russia got on the board first, late in the opening period, when Danila Kvartalnov beat Kristian Oldham (Anchorage, Alaska/Clarkson University) with 1:28 remaining in the stanza. 

Russia doubled its lead at the 7:57 mark of the second period when Igor Rudenkov scored to bring the lead to 2-0.

Oldham played strong in the second period, recording 21 saves for the U.S.

After Team USA killed a penalty following the second Russia goal, it used the momentum to get on the board. 

Moore scored the first goal for the U.S. with 3:59 remaining in the second period.

Shortly thereafter, Jablin tied the game for the U.S. with just 39 seconds remaining in the frame and sent both teams to the locker rooms with the game knotted at two.

Russia came out of the intermission with energy and immediately capitalized to take a 3-2 lead, just 32 seconds into the period. 

The U.S. battled back, testing the Russian goaltender with 10 shots on net and pulling Oldham for a sixth attacker with 1:40 remaining, but could not find a way to even the score. 

Oldham made 47 saves on 50 shots against for Team USA.

NOTES: Team USA recorded 26 shots while Russia had 50 ... Team USA went 0-for-1 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill ... At the 2019 Winter World University Games, Team USA is competing in Group A alongside the Czech Republic, Hungary, Japan, Russia and Slovakia.
