The U.S. Women’s National Team (1-0-0-0/W-OTW-OTL-L) will continue preliminary-round play in the 2019 IIHF Women’s World Championship tonight against its northern rival, Canada. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. local time/12:30 p.m. ET.
GAMEDAY
As the Group A round-robin stage continues, the U.S. will meet Canada in its second game of the tournament tonight at Metro Areena in Espoo. All U.S. games are televised live on NHL Network for the first time ever this year, so tune in and follow along with @USAHockey for live game updates.
GAME ONE RECAP
Melissa Samoskevich (Sandy Hook, Conn.), Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho), Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.), Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.) and Annie Pankowski (Laguna Hills, Calif.) strung together five unanswered goals in the third period to power the U.S. Women’s National Team past Finland, 6-2, in its opening game of the 2019 IIHF Women's World Championship. Kendall Coyne Schofield (Palos Heights, Ill.) also added a goal in the first period and was the game's scoring leader with one goal and two assists for three points, earning her U.S. player of the game honors. ON THE WORLD STAGE
The U.S. has faced Canada more than any other team in IIHF Women’s World Championship play, owning a 10-4-5-8/W-OTW-OTL-L record. The teams have played into overtime on nine occasions, three of which resulted in a shootout. Twenty-one of the 27 games have been decided by two goals or less, while 13 have been one-goal games. The last time these two teams squared off at the IIHF Women’s Worlds was in 2017 in Plymouth, Michigan, in the tournament gold-medal game. Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) scored the game-winning goal with 9:43 to play in overtime lifting the U.S. over Canada, 3-2, to claim the program’s fourth-straight world title.
RIVALRY RENEWED
The U.S. and Canada faced off in a three games this February part of the first-of-its-kind 2019 Rivalry Series. An exciting precursor to the 2019 IIHF Women’s Worlds, the series brought the excitement of the U.S.-Canada rivalry to London and Toronto, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan. Knight scored the game-winning goal and Alex Rigsby (Delafield, Wis.) recorded a 33-save shutout to secure a hard-fought, 1-0 victory for Team USA, in the opening game of the series. Though Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.), Hannah Brandt (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) and Brianna Decker (Dousman, Wis.) each scored, the U.S. fell 4-3 in game two, and then despite another strong effort by Rigsby between the pipes, the U.S. dropped the series finale, 2-0, in Detroit.
