Eustace scores game-winning goal for Team USA

David Eustace (Stoneham, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal and Griffin LaMarre (Haverhill, Mass.) made 11 saves as Team USA topped Canada, 3-2, in its first contest of the three-game development series here at Aréna Howie-Morenz.

“We came out slow, but shook the jitters off and came together as a team to get the W," said Kip St. Germaine, head coach of the U.S. Men's Development Sled Team. "Now we’ve got to rest up and come back out tomorrow to repeat it.”

Canada opened the scoring at the 11:51 mark of the first period to take a 1-0 lead before scoring a second goal just 1:22 later and expanding its lead to two.

The U.S. recorded four shots on goal in the opening frame, but trailed Canada, 2-0, at the end of the first period.

After allowing two goals in the first stanza, LaMarre played strong in the second and third periods, facing six shots and turning all of them away.

Just 25 seconds into the second period, the U.S. got its first goal of the game, courtesy of Ben Musselman (Amelia, Ohio). Dan Malloy (Bowie, Md.) picked up the lone assist on Musselman's first goal of the series.

Just six seconds after killing off an interference penalty, the U.S. struck again to tie the game at two.

At the 3:26 mark of the period, Joseph Woodke (Nashville, Tenn.) took a pass from Harrison Burgess (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) and fired a shot home to knot the score.

With momentum on its side, the U.S. capitalized again just 1:18 after Woodke's game-tying goal.

At the 4:44 mark of the second period, Eustace collected a pass from John Curtin (Thomson Station, Tenn.) and found the back of the net to give Team USA the 3-2 lead. Aaron Loy (Carlsbad, Calif.) picked up the secondary assist on Eustace's game-winning goal.

Team USA went to the locker room after two periods with a 3-2 lead and held Canada to just two shots in the third stanza. LaMarre turned away both attempts from the Canadians to help the U.S. claim game one of the three-game series.
