Declan Farmer (Tampa, Fla.), a member of the gold-medal winning 2019 U.S. National Sled Hockey Team, has been nominated for Best Male Athlete with a Disability for the 2019 ESPY Awards, ESPN announced today. The winners will be determined by fan voting and presented at The ESPYs on July 10 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. Fan voting is now open at ESPN.com/ESPYS.

The ESPYs (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly) is an annual award show that honors athletic achievement, both on an individual and team basis.

Farmer’s nomination comes after leading the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team to its fourth-ever gold medal in world championship history at the 2019 Para Ice Hockey World Championship in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Tied for the tournament lead in points entering the gold-medal game, Farmer scored the game-tying goal with 3:26 to play in regulation to force overtime against rival Canada. Just over five minutes into the extra frame, Farmer then notched the primary assist on Brody Roybal’s game-winning goal to earn U.S. Player of the Game honors. With a tournament-best 14 points (7G, 7A), Farmer was tabbed Best Forward by the Directorate.

At the 2018 Para Hockey Cup last December, Farmer finished competition as the tournament’s leading scorer for the fifth-straight year with 12 points (8G, 4A). His tournament-best eight goals helped guide the U.S. to a fifth-consecutive title in that event.

For the 2018-19 season, Farmer recorded 30 points (16G, 14A) in just 12 games as the U.S. finished with an overall record of 10-1-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L).

This is the third career nomination for Farmer, who won the award in 2014 for his efforts in Team USA’s gold-medal win at the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games. He was also nominated a year ago after his gold-medal game heroics at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games where he scored the game-tying goal and game-winning goal to give the U.S. an unprecedented third-straight gold medal in the event.
