Opening day included fitness testing and a surprise appearance from Hilary Knight

The Girls 16/17 Player Development Camp is officially off and running in St. Cloud, Minn. Close to 60 staff members from across the country, including camp directors, team coaches, skill coaches, team leaders, strength and conditioning coaches, athletic trainers and camp interns, arrived at the St. Cloud State campus yesterday (June 24) afternoon. Upon arrival, the staff participated in a handful of introductory meetings and planning sessions to finalize camp details before today’s player arrival.

Player Arrival & Fitness Testing
The 144 players arrived in St. Cloud beginning at 2 p.m. local time today. After checking in, players dropped their luggage at campus housing before heading to fitness testing, which included both on- and off-ice setups.

Strength and conditioning coaches Tyler Travis (Mercyhurst University), Bill Delongis (Trinity College) and Kelli Vossler (Spark Fitness) ran the players through a series of tests designed to measure each players’ quality of movement, strength, acceleration and agility. The tests are focused on developing the overall athlete and used to set a benchmark for players to improve upon throughout their season.

The players qualified for camp through participation at their district camps, where evaluators helped select the players that would advance to the national camp. This week, they are competing to advance to the Girls U18 Select Camp taking place July 15-21 in St. Cloud. Though a partial roster for that camp was named earlier this spring, eight forward, two defense and six goalie spots are up for grabs.

Surprise Camp Visitor
As part of the Chipotle partnership for Player Development Camps, Olympic gold medalist Hilary Knight surprised campers with a visit to St. Cloud to close out Day 1. She spoke to the group about becoming a better athlete and hockey player, and what they need to focus on this week to get the most out of their experience before answering a few questions from the players.
