Today was the final day of pool play at the 2019 Girls 16/17 Player Development Camp and the stage is now set for tomorrow’s final matchups, with White taking on Light Blue for the camp championship. Recaps and box score links for each of today’s games can be found below.

Camp Leaders
After three games, Light Blue's Emma Thomas (Central District) leads the camp in points (4) and goals (3). Jersey Phillips (New York District), also from Light Blue, leads the way in assists (3). For goalies, Gold's Hannah Skavnak (Minnesota District) has made the most saves (44), while Light Blue's Callie Shanahan (Michigan District) leads in goals-against average (0.87) and save percentage (.971).

Officiating Futures Camp
Along with the development of players here in St. Cloud, the officials working the games are also attending a development camp. Sixteen female officials with aspirations to become better at what they do, including two from Mexico, one from China and one from the United Kingdom, are all taking part in the Futures Camp, which continues the education and instruction needed to qualify to work USA Hockey National Championship tournaments along with becoming eligible to work higher level officiating camps.

The Futures Camp includes games, on-ice sessions and classroom work where they look at the film from their games to evaluate themselves and each other.

On Thursday, two officiating instructors spoke to the players at a camp meeting about the process for becoming an official and the current advancement opportunities within USA Hockey's officiating programs.

Practice #3
To close out the day, the teams were back on the ice for the third practice of camp. Today’s session was focused on angling, both in tight areas and open ice. The practice began with three stations followed by a full-ice drill that teaches players to “read the rush.” To end practice, the teams played a full-ice game that begins 4-on-4 with two defenders beneath each goal line who have an opportunity to join the play.

Today's Games

Staff Spotlight: Katelyn Parker

As an on-ice skills coach, this is Parker's third year as a staff member at the Girls Player Development Camps in addition to working various district-level camps. She also participated in the national-level camps as a player.

Parker joined the University of Connecticut’s women’s hockey staff as an assistant coach this spring after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant at Brown University. In her playing days, Parker was a member of the Colgate women’s hockey team, playing in 141 games, which is the most in program history. She also served as captain for two seasons at Colgate.

“I want to help players learn and grow as athletes at these camps,” said Parker. “The game has given me so much so being able to share my experience and my passion with these young players is a big deal to me. And from a professional standpoint, having the opportunity to learn from some of the top coaches in the country is really exciting.”
