As the 2019 Sled Hockey Player Development Camp reaches the half-way point, we decided to mix things up on Day 3. Instead of splitting the four teams into two on-ice practice sessions, all four teams practiced together on Wednesday morning.
After kicking off the morning with picture day, all four teams took the ice to work on small area games. Following practice, everyone congregated back at the dorms for a barbecue.
In addition to a different practice format, the game format also changed on Wednesday. Instead of the normal red, white, blue and gold rosters, all four Paralympian mentor coaches got together and held a draft to choose their teams for Wednesday night’s games.
Paralympians Noah Grove, Jen Lee, Luke McDermott and Rico Roman were behind the bench for the Wednesday's draft game.
With the new drafted teams, the red, white, blue and gold team became Team Grove, Team Lee, Team McDermott and Team Roman.
After a scoreless first half, Jacob Jones opened the scoring for Team McDermott. Ben Musselman extended Team McDermott's lead to two goals 10 minutes later. Despite Erik Knotts putting Team Roman on the board late in the game, Team McDermott held on to the 2-1 victory.
In the second game of the night, Team Lee took a 2-0 lead in the first, with goals from John Curtain and Rob Easley just 30 seconds apart. Joey Woodke scored three unanswered goals for Team Grove, completing a natural hat trick and giving Noah Grove's team the 3-2 comeback victory.
Teams will return to the regularly assigned red, white, blue and gold rosters for Thursday's games.
