Teams will practice tomorrow before games resume on Tuesday

In today's 1 p.m. ET tilt, USA Blue defeated Finland by a 7-1 count thanks to a pair of goals from both Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y.) and John Beecher (Elmira, N.Y.). The day then closed with Sweden claiming a 2-1 overtime win against USA White.

SWEDEN 2, USA WHITE 1 (OT)

Sweden opened the scoring 2:31 into the frame when Marcus Karlberg skated down the right side and fired a slap shot past the blocker of U.S. netminder Dustin Wolf (Tustin, Calif.) for a shorthanded tally.

USA White evened the score just under four minutes later when Arthur Kaliyev (Delray Beach, Fla.) tallied on the man-advantage. The play started from the top of the left circle where Bode Wilde (Birmingham, Mich.) fired a shot on goal that led to a rebound Jack Drury (Winnetka, Ill.) was able to backhand behind him for Kaliyev to tap inside the far post.

Both teams traded chances throughout the rest of the frame in search of the go-ahead goal, but neither was able to convert as the game entered intermission knotted, 1-1.

The middle stanza generated a number of special team opportunities for both sides. While USA White challenged Swedish netminder Erik Portillo, Wolf stood tall turning aside at 18 shots he faced in the frame to keep the game even after 40 minutes of play.

In the third period both teams exchanged chances, but neither team could find the back of the net sending the game into a five-minute three-on-three overtime.

In the extra frame, the two teams went back-and-forth again before Olofsson was able to sneak one past Wolf. Olofsson drove to the net, and after a scramble the puck trickled across the goal line.

USA BLUE 7, FINLAND 1

Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y.) and John Beecher (Elmira, N.Y.) each scored twice as USA Blue registered its second win in as many days here at the 2019 World Junior Summer Showcase.

USA Blue took control from the opening face-off, generating a series of chances throughout the first five minutes of play. A pair of U.S. penalties towards the middle of the frame resulted in the U.S. penalty kill, backed by the strong goaltending play of Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.), to come up strong and deny a pair of Finland chances.

With 4:44 to play in the frame, Jon Gruden (Rochester Hills, Mich.) put USA Blue on the board with a redirection past Finnish goaltender Jasper Patrikainen. The play started in the corner where Beecher sent a pass towards the blue line that Christian Krygier (Novi, Mich.) was able to throw towards goal. Parked in front of the crease, Gruden was able to tip it into the top right corner for the game’s opening goal.

Farabee doubled USA Blue’s lead less than a minute later when he picked up a loose puck, split Finland’s two defenders and slipped a backhanded shot through the legs of Patrikainen.

Sampo Ranta cut Finland’s lead to one with 1:38 left in the frame when he took a feed from Antti Saarela and beat Knight for his second goal in as many games.

The middle period started with Cam York (Anaheim, Calif.) giving USA Blue another two-goal lead exactly one minute into the frame. With Finland trying to clear its zone, Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) caught an errant puck at the blue line and slid it across to York who crept towards the slot before rifling a wrist shot into the top right corner.

Towards the midpoint of the frame, Beecher nearly made it 4-1 off a 2-on-1 with Parker Ford but his chance off the left-side was denied by the blocker of Patrikainen.

In the final minute of the second period, Farabee tallied his second goal of the game when he picked up a loose puck behind the net, curled towards the left faceoff dot and lifted a backhanded effort into the top-left corner.

Back-to-back goals from Beecher in the second-half of the third period made the score 6-1. His first goal came from a redirection off a shot by Krygier, his second assist of the game. Less than a minute later, Beecher fired home a pass from Spencer Stastney (Mequon, Wis.) for his third goals in two games.

Shane Pinto (Franklin Square, N.Y.) scored with just over two minutes to go to cap the scoring for the U.S. After Jackson Lacombe (Eden Prairie, Minn.) received a pass from Krygier, he got by his defender and fired a shot on net. Pinto was able to put home the rebound on the far side.
