Minnesota natives lead U.S. scoring effort

PIESTANY, Slovakia – Despite goals from Jake Ratzlaff (Rosemount, Minn.) and Blake Biondi (Hermantown, Minn.), the U.S. Under-18 Men’s Select Team fell, 6-2, to Russia in its tournament-opening game Monday evening at Easton Arena.

Team USA returns to action Tuesday (Aug. 6) when it takes on tournament host Slovakia at Easton Arena. Puck drop is slated for 1 p.m. ET.

"We had a great first period against a highly skilled Russian team," said head coach Pat Ferschweiler. "In the second period, we got away from our game a little bit and they took advantage. Overall, I think the guys had a great effort and if we play that hard the next few games, we're going to have a chance to win both them as well."

Ratzlaff opened the scoring for the United States just 2:41 into the game when he beat Russian goaltender Yaroslav Askarov from the left circle off an initial shot by Avery Hayes (Westland, Mich.).

Biondi doubled Team USA’s lead with a power-play goal seven minutes later to give the U.S. a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission. David Ma (Yonkers, N.Y.) earned the assist on the goal.

Russia took control of the game in the second period, scoring four goals in the first 11 minutes of the stanza for a 4-2 advantage after 40 minutes of play.

Despite outshooting Russia 15-6 over the final frame, another pair of goals for Russia accounted for the 6-2 final.

Louden Hogg (Edina, Minn.) made 21 saves for the United States.
