First loss for U.S. sends Junior Select Team to third place game

DAWSON CREEK, British Columbia – The U.S. Junior Select Team fought back from a 1-0 deficit to send its semifinal game to overtime, but fell to Canada East 2-1 in the shootout today at the Encana Events Centre.

“Tonight, for whatever reason it just didn’t go,” said head coach Anthony Noreen (Kearney, Neb.). “When you have the shots and the scoring chances we did, with a group as talented as our guys, you like to think you’ll find a way and today didn’t go. But we’ve got to find a way to regroup because it would be a shame for this group – as hard as they’ve worked and as good of teammates as they’ve been – to not come away with a medal.”

Logan Stein (Suwanee, Ga.) started off strong in net for the U.S., stopping nine shots on goal in the first period. The opening frame was relatively quiet otherwise, as both teams exchanged scoring chances but went into intermission scoreless.

Ryland Mosley scored on the powerplay at 1:31 in the second period to give Canada East an early lead. Despite chances on both sides, neither team could capitalize on their scoring opportunities for the remainder of the period and went into the second intermission with Canada East up 1-0.

Gunnarwolfe Fontaine (East Greenwich, R.I.) scored from a  Sean Farrell (Hopkinton, Mass.) and Michael Koster (Chaska, Minn.)  pass to tie the game 1-1 only 24 seconds into the third frame. Deadlocked at one and searching for a goal in the final minutes of regulation, neither team could convert their scoring chances as the game entered overtime.

Highlights

An extra ten minutes wasn’t enough for either team to score and the game moved to a shootout.

Canada East outscored the U.S. 2-1 in the shootout to defeat Team USA. The U.S. heads to the third-place game tomorrow against the loser of tonight’s Russia and Czech Republic matchup up.

Stein made 23 saves in net, in addition to two shootout attempts, for the United States.
