Gameday: U.S. Junior Select Team Faces Off Against the Czech Republic

DAWSON CREEK, British Columbia – The U.S. Junior Select Team takes on the Czech Republic in the third-place game of the World Junior A Challenge today at 2:00 p.m. E.T. Today’s game will be live streamed on TSN.

Today’s Opponent: Czech Republic

Team USA is 3-1-0-1 (W-OTW-L-OTL) in 2019 World Junior A Challenge play, while the Czech Republic is 2-1-1-1. The U.S. and the Czech Republic were in the number one and two spots, respectively, in the standings prior to the semifinal matchups on Saturday.

The U.S. Junior Select Team boasts three of the top five points leaders, including Brendan Brisson (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) who posted a multi-point effort in each of the four preliminary round games. Team USA has also outscored opponents 23-13.

2023 WJAC

Team USA and the Czech Republic met in the preliminary round on Mon. Dec. 9, with the U.S. Junior Select Team coming out on top. Two goals, including the overtime winner, from Gunnarwolfe Fontaine (East Greenwich, R.I.) and three assists from Brendan Brisson (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) helped the U.S. Junior Select Team to a 5-4 overtime victory over the Czech Republic.

Team USA has finished in the top three at the World Junior A Challenge 10 times in the past 10 years, and has won five of the last seven World Junior A Challenges.

Game Four Recap:

The U.S. Junior Select Team fought back from a 1-0 deficit to send the game to overtime, but fell to Canada East 2-1 in the shootout today at the Encana Events Centre.

Canada East outscored the U.S. 2-1 in the shootout to knock Team USA out of the running for gold. Team USA heads to the third place game today against the Czech Republic, after the Czechs fell to Russia 5-1.

Stein made 23 saves in net for the United States.
