The U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team takes on Canada this afternoon in the final game of preliminary play at the 2020 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship. Puck drop is set for 12:30 p.m. local time (6:30 a.m. ET) and the contest can be streamed live here.
In the 2019 tournament in Obihiro, Japan, the U.S. went 4-0-1-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) and earned a silver medal to extend its unprecedented medal streak in tournament play to 12-straight IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championships.
GAMEDAY - The U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team rounds out preliminary-round play today at the 2020 International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women’s World Championship against Canada at the Ice Rink Vlado Dzurilla in Bratislava, Slovakia. AGAINST CANADA - The U.S. is 7-4-4-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L) against Canada all-time in IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship play. The U.S. and Canada last met in the gold-medal game of last year's tournament when Canada defeated Team USA, 3-2, in overtime. Nineteen players participated in the 2019 Under-18 Series vs. Canada last August in Lake Placid, New York, as members of the U.S. Under-18 Women’s Select Team.
CLASH OF THE CHAMPIONS - Since the IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship's inception in 2008, the United States has captured the gold medal seven times, facing Canada on six of those occasions. The U.S. and Canada have taken home gold and silver in all of the previous 12 tournaments.
POINTS, POINTS, POINTS - Lacey Eden (Annapolis, Md.) has recorded a point in each of Team USA's two contests this tournament. She currently leads the team in scoring with three assists, including the game-winning assist in wins against both Finland and Russia. In addition, Abbey Murphy (Evergreen Park, Ill.) is on the hunt for her 10th goal in Under-18 Women's World Championship play. In three tournament appearances, Murphy has tallied nine goals and 12 points in 11 games, averaging over a point per contest.
GAME TWO RECAP - Ella Huber (Northfield, Ill.) scored the lone goal of the game as the U.S. downed Russia, 1-0, on Friday. Makenna Webster (St. Louis, Mo.) and Lacey Eden each tallied assists on the goal, and goaltender Amanda Thiele (Milford, Mich.) made 20 saves in her Under-18 Women's National Team debut. Huber, Webster, and Audrey Wethington (Edina, Minn) each had three shots on goal and Team USA outshot Russia 25-20 in the victory.
