Team USA finishes 3-0-0-1 in tournament

LAUSANNE, Switzerland – The U.S. Youth Men's Olympic Ice Hockey Team fell, 4-0, to Russia in the gold-medal game of the 2020 Youth Olympic Games today at Vaudoise Arena.

The U.S. finishes 3-0-0-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L) in the tournament to earn a silver medal. Team USA has medaled in each of the last two Youth Olympic Games, including winning a gold medal at the 2016 tournament in Lillehammer, Norway.

“I’m tremendously proud of this group of players and what they accomplished,” said head coach Scott Paluch (Bowling Green, Ohio). “They fought very hard, we just got behind early and could never really get established. I’m very proud of their effort and their representation of USA Hockey and Team USA.”

Russia took a 1-0 lead off the stick of Matvei Michkov 1:59 into the first period, 35 seconds into a U.S. penalty kill. Michkov then doubled Russia’s lead with 33 second remaining in the opening frame to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

The U.S. had several quality scoring chances to open the second period, including at the 2:44 mark when Frank Nazar (Mt. Clemens, Mich.) crashed the crease to fire a feed from Vinny Borgesi (Philadelphia, Pa.), but his shot was stopped by Russian goaltender Sergei Ivanov.

Team USA got another stellar look on goal 11 seconds later off a shot from Gavin Brindley (Estero, Fla.) at the left circle, but Ivanov made the save. Russia converted on the power play four minutes later to stretch the lead to 3-0.

U.S. netminder Dylan Silverstein (Calabasas, Calif.) made several key saves throughout the game, including a pad save on a breakaway from Michkov with 6:19 remaining in the middle frame to keep it a 3-0 game.

Despite generating more offense in the final period of regulation, the U.S. could not convert, and Russia added another goal at the 5:13 mark of the frame to seal a 4-0 win.

Silverstein stopped 22 shots in goal for the U.S.

NOTES: Isaac Howard (Hudson, Wis.) led the U.S. in points and goals scored at the tournament with seven goals … Frank Nazar tallied five points (3G, 2A) … Fourteen U.S. skaters recorded points at the tournament … The U.S. has now medaled in two of the last three Youth Olympic Games.
