U.S. Women's Development Team Wins Three-Game Series Against Canada 2-1

Team USA wins Game 3 in a shootout to claim the series victory

In the series finale on Sunday, the U.S. Women's Development Sled Hockey Team defeated Canada in a shootout to win the three-game series 2-1 in Richmond, British Columbia.

The games took place at the Richmond Olympic Oval on Friday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. ET, Saturday, Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. ET and Sunday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. ET and all games were livestreamed on Oval TV. 


Game 1 Recap: CAN 3, USA 2

Canada held a 2-0 lead after the first period. Team USA cut that lead in half 8:15 into the second period when Robynne Hill (Fountain, Colo.) scored off a pass from alternate captain Kelsey DiClaudio (Pittsburgh, Pa). 

Less than two minutes later, Canada reclaimed a two-goal lead after Christina Picton scored her second goal of the day to make it 3-1 with 5:16 left to play in regulation.

Captain Erica Mitchell (Chicago, Ill.) scored with :54 left on the clock to seal the final at 3-2. DiClaudio finished with two points after registering an assist on Mitchell's goal.

Game 2 Recap: USA 3, CAN 1

Catherine Faherty (Norwell, Mass.) opened the scoring just over eight minutes into the first period to give the U.S. and early 1-0 lead. 

Both the U.S. and Canada were held scoreless in the second period. U.S. goaltender Hope Bevilhymer (Las Vegas, Nev.), who finished with 13 saves overall, made five stops in the second period alone.

Less than five minutes into the third period, Kelsey DiClaudio (Pittsburgh, Pa.) extended Team USA's lead to 2-0 after she notched an unassisted goal 4:41 into the third. 

Erica Mitchell (Chicago, Ill.) added another tally for Team USA 8:31 into the third period to give the U.S. a commanding 3-0 lead with just over five minutes to play in regulation. 

Canada got on the board with 3:14 remaining in the game, but the final stood 3-1 in favor of Team USA. DiClaudio led the team with three points (1g, 2a) and Faherty finished with two (1g, 1a).


Game 3 Recap: USA 2, CAN 1 (Shootout)

Kelsey DiClaudio (Pittsburgh, Pa.) gave the U.S. a 1-0 lead 2:23 into the first period of the final game of the series. Canada evened the score just over a minute later.

Both the U.S. and Canada were held scoreless in the second and third periods. Team USA outshot Canada 7-3 in the second period and shots on goal were even 7-7 in the third, but the score remained 1-1 at the end of regulation.

After a scoreless overtime period, the series finale went into a shootout. DiClaudio and Catherine Faherty (Norwell, Mass.) scored for the U.S. and Hope Bevilhymer (Las Vegas, Nev.) made two big saves to secure the victory for Team USA.
