BLAINE, Minn. – Although the weather is rainy and cold in Blaine, Minnesota, today, the mood is sunny inside the Super Rink here as 46 of the top women’s players from across the United States are gathered for a week-long evaluation camp.
For the next five days, athletes will go through on- and off-ice training, with the ultimate goal of being selected as one of the 25 players who will make-up the U.S. Women’s National Team in the 2021 IIHF Women’s World Championship May 6-16 in Halifax and Truro, Nova Scotia.
“Our goal is to find the right 25 players to best represent USA Hockey and earn gold at the upcoming world championship,” said Bob Corkum, head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team. “I know we’ll face tough decisions and that’s, I guess, a good problem to have and a credit to those across the country at the grassroots level who have helped these players get to this point.”
The 46 players attending the camp includes Olympians, reigning world champions, NCAA Division I national champions and even a high school senior. The athletes will be split into two teams for the week who they’ll train, practice, play and eat with throughout camp.
Tomorrow, starting with strength and conditioning and moving on to on-ice drills, each athlete will face a variety of assessments as part of the overall camp evaluation.
On day two, the teams will practice in the morning and then begin a scrimmage series in the afternoon, a format that will continue throughout the remainder of the camp.
It is anticipated that the final U.S. roster for the 2021 IIHF Women’s World Championship will be revealed the morning of March 30.
