High level of competition sets stage heading into IIHF Women’s World Championship

BLAINE, Minn. –  After five days of intense competition, the U.S. Women’s National Team Evaluation Camp concluded yesterday in Blaine, Minnesota, culminating with the 25-player U.S. Women’s National Team roster being unveiled for the upcoming IIHF Women’s World Championship on May 6-16, in Halifax and Truro, Nova Scotia.

Starting last Thursday, the 46 invited athletes went through on- and off-ice training and the joy of being back together was evident throughout the week.

“It was so much fun being back with teammates,” said forward Hayley Scamurra. “I've been training by myself so to feel that camaraderie again was special. We really push each other to be at our best at every one of these camps.”

The 46 players were divided into two teams and the camp included a series of four games between the two squads that each included a five-minute overtime period, regardless of the scores at the end of regulation, and a five-player shootout.

Although respectful to each other regardless which team they played for prior to that moment, once on the ice going head to head, it was all business.

"This was definitely one of the most competitive camps/tryouts I have attended for USA Hockey,” said defender Kacey Bellamy. “The skill level of the younger generation mixed with the experience of veteran players created an intense four-game series. It is always an honor to put on the USA Hockey jersey no matter what aspect and direction this program is heading. It is very exciting to be a part of it."

The camp closed out on Monday night with the news of which players had been selected to represent the U.S. at the upcoming IIHF Women’s World Championship.

“It’s always difficult to arrive at a final roster and this year was no different,” said Katie Million, director of women’s national team programs for USA Hockey. “We’re grateful that the world championship is taking place and appreciate the efforts of Hockey Canada, the IIHF and local officials in all that is being done in preparation for what I’m sure will be a great tournament.”
