Last night, Cal Petersen made 27 saves and Jason Robertson scored the first U.S. goal of the tournament, but the U.S. fell to Finland, 2-1. Overall, head coach Jack Capuano was pleased with Team USA's effort, stating, "I thought the guys played really well given the short time we’ve spent together so far. We did a lot of good things, but their goalie played well and we couldn’t capitalize on our chances. There’s a lot of good things we can look at as we turn our attention here toward Canada tomorrow." JASON ROBERTSON AND FINLAND BREAKAWAY GOALS
U.S. forward Jason Robertson has skated in eight international games between the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship (silver) and yesterday's opening game here in Latvia. In those eight outings, the Dallas Stars forward has tallied two goals -- coincidentally both against Finland. As Robertson recalled during last night's postgame availability, his first goal in 2019 (4-1, USA win) came with a five-hole tally off a breakaway, not too differently from last night's goal.

Due to COVID protocols, Team USA has gone back to traditional ways of team bonding with a card table, a ping pong table and an Xbox area at the hotel ... Kevin Rooney celebrated his 28th birthday just two days ago (May 21) here in Riga ... Connor Mackey arrived in Latvia yesterday but is still in tournament-mandated quarantine before being able to join Team USA ... 10 players are making their debut in an IIHF world championship here in Latvia, including Colin Blackwell, Brian Boyle, Conor Garland, Connor Mackey, Trevor Moore, Eric Robinson, Kevin Rooney, Matt Roy, Ryan Shea and Matt Tennyson.
