Team USA Meets Germany in Bronze-Medal Matchup

Team seeking its eighth bronze

The U.S. meets Germany in the bronze-medal game here today at the 2021 IIHF Men's World Championship. Opening faceoff is set for 8:15 a.m. ET and the game can be seen live on NHL Network.

All-time, the U.S. is 12-0-1-4-3 (W-OTW-OTL-L-T) in 20 meetings against Germany. It is the second meeting between the two teams after a preliminary-round 2-0 win for Team USA on May 31. Cal Petersen, who earned U.S. Player of the Game honors, put forth a 33-save shutout performance while Jason Robertson converted on a U.S. powerplay and Colin Blackwell added an empty-netter tally to secure the win for the United States.

TEAM USA'S All-Time U.S. Medals
A win today would give the U.S. its 13th tournament medal after earning gold once (1933), silver four times (1950, 1939, 1934, 1931) and bronze seven times (2018, 2015, 2013, 2004, 1996, 1952, 1949). Of Team USA's seven bronze medals, five were claimed by winning bronze-medal games while two came via tournament standings and round-robin play.

U.S. Bronze-Medal Game Appearances
The U.S. is 5-4 in nine previous bronze-medal games in the IIHF Men's World Championship. The IIHF has The IIHF has used various formats over its history, including round robin, double round robin and round-robin medal play among the most common. All-time, the United States has claimed seven bronze medals in the world championship. Of those six, two have come by virtue of the medal being determined by standings.

Garland, Jones and Petersen Tabbed Top 3 U.S. Player
Following Team USA's semifinal loss to Canada, the IIHF announced that forward Conor Garland (Scituate, Mass.), defenseman Zac Jones (Glen Allen, Va.) and goaltender Cal Petersen (Waterloo, Iowa) were tabbed Team USA's top three players of the tournament, as named by the team's staff.
     Through nine games, Garland leads the U.S. in goals (5), assists (5) and points (10). Following his two-goal effort against Italy in the preliminary-round, he was tabbed the U.S. Player of the Game. Jones registered three points -- all assists -- while lead the team in time-on-ice averaging 20:21 through nine games. Petersen ranks second in the tournament in save percentage (.949), goals-against-average (1.34) and is one of two goaltenders with two shutouts. In the preliminary-round, he registered two shutouts (3-0 vs. KAZ; 2-0 vs. GER) while accumulating a total of 51 shots between the two games, including 33 in the Germany win alone. He is currently 4-2 in his six starts.
