GAME DAY: U.S. and Canada Square Off in Gold-Medal Game

Team USA looks to capture sixth-straight WWC gold medal

The U.S. Women's National Team will look to bring home its sixth-straight IIHF Women's World Championship title when it takes on Canada today in the gold-medal game. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. ET time at WinSport Arena and the game will be broadcast live in the U.S. on NHL Network. 

USWNT IN THE GOLD-MEDAL GAME

The U.S. is 4-5-3-7 (W-OTW-OTL-L) all-time in gold-medal games at the IIHF Women's World Championship. The U.S. has reached the gold medal game in all 19 of the events, capturing the event’s top prize the last five years and now a total of nine times (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019), including eight of the last nine tournaments. The U.S. had faced Canada in all 18 gold-medal games it played in up until 2019, when it faced Finland in the championship matchup.

SERIES VS. CANADA

With its loss to Canada in the preliminary round, the U.S. is now 11-4-5-9 (W-OTW-OTL-L) all-time against Canada at the IIHF Women's World Championship. The U.S. has faced Canada in 18 of 19 gold-medal game appearances at the WWC and is 4-4-3-7 (W-OTW-OTL-L) against Canada in WWC gold-medal games. 

FLASHBACK TO PRELIMS: USA vs. CANADA

The U.S. suffered its only loss of the tournament to Canada in the preliminary round of the 2021 IIHF Women's World Championship.  Lee Stecklein (Roseville, Minn.) scored Team USA’s lone goal as the USWNT dropped its final game of the preliminary round to Canada, 5-1, on August 26. Alex Cavallini (Delafield, Wis.) started in net for the U.S., stopping 16 shots. Nicole Hensley (Lakewood, Colo.) came in for relief with 12:44 left in the second, stopping six shots. Stecklein was dubbed Player of the Game.
