The U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team is faces off in the gold medal game against Canada at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games. LAST TIME OUT

Team USA advanced to the gold medal game on Monday after defeating Finland in the semifinals, 4-1, at the Wukesong Sport Center. After a scoreless first period, the U.S. jumped out to a 2-0 lead off goals from Cayla Barnes and Hilary Knight. The team extended its lead in the third when Hayley Scamurra deflected a Barnes shot past the Finland keeper. A late score by Finland and an empty net goal by Abby Roque left the game at 4-1. Alex Cavallini made 25 saves in net for the win.

TODAY'S MATCHUP

The U.S. will face Canada in the gold medal game for the fourth consecutive Olympic Winter Games. The meeting marks the 10th overall Olympic meeting between the two teams, with Canada having won the last meeting, 4-2, in the final preliminary round game in Beijing. Six different U.S. players recorded a point in the game, as the U.S. outshot the Canadians, 53-27 in the effort.

Team USA has advanced to the gold medal game in six of the last seven Olympics, having only played for the bronze medal in 2006. The U.S. holds a 1-1-1-2 record in the gold medal game, topping the podium in both 2018 and 1998.

The team has a +20 goal differential on the tournament.  

CAVALLINI IN NET

Alex Cavallini has been the starting netminder for the U.S. since entering the playoff rounds. The two-time Olympian is 3-0, stopping a combined 42 of 44 shots faced, with a 0.67 GAA, the lowest all-time in U.S. women's Olympic history (with a min. 3 games played). 

PUTTING PUCKS ON NET

Team USA has registered over 40 shots on goal in each of its last six games, outshooting opponents 334-95. Last game, Team USA outshot Finland 42-26. The U.S. has scored 28 goals throughout the tournament. 

KNIGHT PLAYS 22ND CAREER OLYMPIC GAME

Today marks Hilary Knight's 22nd career Olympic game, becoming the record holder for most Olympic contests played in U.S. women's hockey history. She surpasses Jenny Potter and Angela Ruggiero, who both played in 21 career contests.
