Grier, MacFarland To Assist Martin With Player Personnel

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Ryan Martin (Simsbury, Conn.), who currently serves as assistant general manager of the New York Rangers and general manager of the Hartford Wolf Pack, has been named general manager of the 2022 U.S. Men’s National Team. The team will compete in the 2022 International Ice Hockey Federation Men’s World Championship May 13-29 in Tampere and Helsinki, Finland.

Martin is in his first year with the Rangers after a 16-year stint (2005-21) with the Detroit Red Wings, including 11 seasons (2010-21) as the team’s assistant general manager and eight seasons as the general manager of the Grand Rapids Griffins (2013-21).

“We’re excited to have Ryan as general manager,” said John Vanbiesbrouck, assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey and also part of the management group for the 2022 U.S. Men’s National Team. “He’s well-versed with our player pool, passionate and knows what it takes to win on the international stage.”

“It’s a great honor to be asked,” said Martin, “and I look forward to the challenge ahead. Our player pool is deep and that’s exciting to consider as we look to build a team that gives us an opportunity to bring back a gold medal.”

Martin has been closely involved with USA Hockey for the last decade, assisting in player personnel for the U.S. National Junior Team. During that time, the U.S. has earned six total medals, including three gold (2013, 2017, 2021), one silver (2019) and two bronze (2016, 2018).

Prior to his time with Detroit, Martin spent seven years in various legal roles, including time as an NHLPA certified player agent.

GRIER, MacFARLAND TO ASSIST WITH PLAYER PERSONNEL

Mike Grier (Detroit, Mich.), who currently serves as a hockey operations advisor for the New York Rangers, and Chris MacFarland (Nanuet, N.Y.), assistant general manager of the Colorado Avalanche, will assist Martin in player personnel decisions in building the 2022 U.S. Men’s National Team.

“We’re fortunate to have both Mike and Chris engaged in helping build our team,” said Vanbiesbrouck. “They bring varied perspectives and that will be extremely valuable to the process and our ultimate goal to win the gold medal.”

Grier played 1,060 career regular-season games in the NHL from 1996-2011 and recorded 383 points, including 162 goals. He played collegiately at Boston University (1993-96) and represented the U.S. on the international stage in the 1995 IIHF World Junior Championship and 2004 IIHF Men’s World Championship.

MacFarland is in his seventh season as assistant general manager of the Colorado Avalanche. Prior to his tenure with the Avalanche, he was a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets hockey operations department for 16 years, including his last seven campaigns as assistant general manager. MacFarland played college hockey at Pace University.

NOTES: The U.S. is 24-3-0-9 (W-L-OTL-L) in its last four world championship appearances, with two bronze medals to its credit (2021, 2018).
