Adam Nightingale Named Head Coach for 2022 U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team

Team USA opens IIHF U18 World Championship against Canada on April 23

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.Adam Nightingale (Cheboygan, Mich.), who is completing his second season as a head coach at USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, will serve as head coach of the U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team that will compete in the upcoming 2022 IIHF Under-18 Men's World Championship, it was announced today by USA Hockey. 

The tournament is set for April 23-May 1 in Landshut and Kaufbeuren, Germany. The U.S. will face Canada in its opening game on April 23.   

Nightingale will be joined by assistant coaches Nick Fohr (Grand Forks, N.D.), Jimmy Mullin (Philadelphia, Pa.), David Lassonde (Durham, N.H.) and Brent Darnell (Livonia, Mich.).  

ABOUT NIGHTINGALE

Adam Nightingale will serve as head coach of the Under-18 Men's National Team for the first time, but is no stranger to the international stage. He was an assistant coach for the bronze medal-winning 2021 U.S. Men's National Team in addition to serving as video coach for the U.S. Men's National Team three consecutive years (2017-19), including for the bronze medal-winning 2018 squad. He was also the video coach for the 2015 U.S. National Junior Team.

Nightingale's 12 years of coaching experience has spanned the youth, collegiate and professional ranks. Prior to joining the NTDP for the 2020-21 campaign, the Cheboygan, Michigan, native worked three seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, most recently serving as assistant coach for the 2019-20 season. Prior, he spent the 2016-17 season as video coach of the Buffalo Sabres. Before joining the pro ranks, Nightingale served as head coach of the Shattuck St. Mary's 14U Team in Faribault, Minnesota, where he coached future NTDP players Oliver Wahlstrom, Drew Helleson and Cam York. Nightingale was also the director of hockey operations for his alma mater, Michigan State University, from 2010-14.

ABOUT FOHR

Nick Fohr, an associate coach at USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, has extensive experience with Team USA on the international stage and will serve as an assistant coach for the sixth time at a U18 Men's World Championship. Fohr has been a part of four medal-winning squads, including the 2015 and 2017 gold-medal teams. He has been with the NTDP since 2011, spending six years as an assistant coach before being promoted to associate coach prior to the 2017-18 season. Fohr began his coaching career as a student assistant at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, his alma mater, for the 2002-03 season. He went to Miami University as an assistant coach for the following campaign, before returning to Omaha as director of hockey operations from 2004-07 and assistant coach from 2007-11. 

ABOUT MULLIN

Jimmy Mullin, in his first season as an assistant coach at USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, will make his IIHF coaching debut with the 2022 U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team. Before arriving in Plymouth, Mullin served as director of player development and advancement and head coach of the 15O team for the Ohio AAA Blue Jackets. Previously, he spent time with the Indy Jr. Fuel as the 18U head coach and was the director of scouting for the NAHL's Chippewa Steel.

ABOUT LASSONDE

David Lassonde, in his second season as USA Hockey's national goaltending coach, brings over 30 years of experience to the staff, including collegiate stops at Dartmouth College, University of Denver, University of New Hampshire, Miami University and the University of Wisconsin. Lassonde has served as an assistant coach for U.S. teams on the international stage nine times, most recently for the 2022 U.S. Olympic Men's Hockey Team. He was also part of the gold medal-winning 2013 U.S. National Junior Team coaching staff.

ABOUT DARNELL

Brent Darnell, in his initial season as the assistant director of player personnel for USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, will be making his IIHF coaching debut with the U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team. Prior to taking his current role, Darnell served two seasons (2019-21) as an assistant coach at the NTDP and previous to that was the senior director of education for College Hockey Inc.

USA Hockey has also announced the rest of the staff for the 2022 U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team including general manager Scott Monaghan (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.); director of sports science Brian Galivan (Chicago, Ill.); hockey operations manager Ashton Duplessie (Bethesda, Md.); equipment manager Brock Bradley (West Stockholm, N.Y.); athletic trainer Dennis MacDonald (Detroit Mich.); team physician Dr. Doug Weiss (Dublin, N.H.); communications manager Jon Edwards (Neversink, N.Y.) and digital content manager Michael Reedy (West Dundee, Ill.).
