TAMPERE, Finland – The U.S. Men’s National Team will face a key test tonight against Finland in its third preliminary round game at the 2022 IIHF Men’s World Championship. Opening faceoff is set for 8:20 p.m. (1:20 p.m. ET) and NHL Network will televise the game live. Game stats can be found here

“They’re obviously a really good team and I’m sure the building will be sold out and it will be a great environment,” said David Quinn, head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team. “It’s a game you love to play in if you’re a player and I know our guys will be ready.”

The U.S. and Finland have met 65 previous times in the men’s world championship and Finland has won 33 times, the U.S. 24 with eight ties.

Yesterday afternoon, the U.S. got by a pesky Austria team, 3-2, in overtime. Team USA trailed 2-0, but rallied for three straight, with tallies by Kieffer Bellows and Adam Gaudette in regulation and Luke Hughes in overtime.

The U.S. is looking for its third straight win to start the world championship, something that has happened only 11 times previously, last in 2018.

Finland has won its opening two games of the world championship with a 5-0 victory over Norway to open the tournament on Friday (May 13) and a 2-1 triumph against Latvia on Saturday (May 14).

After today, the U.S. will have two days off before returning to action against Great Britain on Thursday (May 19) at 4:20 p.m. (9:20 a.m. ET).

Finland and Sweden lead Group B through two games, each with six points, while the U.S. has five points and is in third place among the eight teams.
