MADISON, Wis. – Team USA opens its 2022 Under-18 Women’s World Championship campaign on Monday with a preliminary-round meeting against Sweden. Puck drop is set for 8 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT

Monday’s tilt marks the U.S.’ first U18 WWC since 2020, after taking home gold following a 2-1 overtime victory against Canada. Kiara Zanon tallied the game-winning goal with 3:08 left in overtime, while Skylar Vetter made 31 saves in net in the winning effort. The U.S. outshot Canada 34-32. 2022 is the first U18 WWC competition since 2020 due to the global pandemic.

TODAY'S MATCHUP

The U.S. takes the ice for its first of three preliminary-round games, facing off against Sweden at LaBahn Arena. The tilt marks the first Under-18 Women's World Championship meeting between the two teams since a preliminary round matchup in 2019, where Team USA topped Sweden, 2-0.

A LONG TIME COMING

The U.S. Women's Under-18 National Team takes the ice for international competition for the first time in 887 days. The team last competed on Jan. 2, 2020, in the 2020 U18 Women's World Championship gold medal game. Team USA defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime to win gold. The 2021 U18 WWC was canceled due to COVID and the 2022 tournament was rescheduled from January in Sweden to June in Madison due to COVID as well.

SECOND GO AROUND

Danielle Burgen and Kirsten Simms are the only two returning players from the 2020 edition of the U.S. Under-18 Women's World Championship team. The pair played an integral part in bringing home gold in a 2-1 overtime victory over Canada in 2020. Simms tallied two assists in the tournament, while Burgen picked up one assist.
