GAMEDAY: Team USA Closes Out Prelims Against Canada

U.S. set to face Canada in third game in four days

MADISON, Wis. – Team USA will close out preliminary round play on Thursday with a meeting against rival Canada. Puck drop is set for 8 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on ESPN+. The game will be available on delay the following day (June 10) at 12 p.m. ET on NHL Network. 

LAST TIME OUT

Behind four points (2G, 2A) from Tessa Janecke (Orangeville, Ill.), two goals from Laila Edwards (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) and an 11-save shutout from Ava McNaughton (Seven Fields, Pa.), the U.S. topped Finland 5-0 in the second preliminary-round game of the IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship. Team USA outshot Finland 47-11, moving to 2-0 in preliminary-round play.

TODAY'S MATCHUP

The U.S. takes the ice for its final preliminary round game of the tournament against rival Canada at LaBahn Arena. The tilt marks the 20th all-time meeting between the two teams at an Under-18 Women's World Championship. This marks the first meeting between the two teams at the tournament since Team USA topped Canada, 2-1, in overtime of the 2020 gold medal game.

AGAINST CANADA

The U.S. holds a 12-7 record against Canada in Under-18 Women's World Championship meetings. Team USA sits at a 7-3 advantage in the last 10 meetings at this tournament, including wins in the 2020 and 2017 gold medal games.

FIRST PERIOD FRENZY

Team USA has outscored its opponents 6-0 in the first period of its first two preliminary round games. The team put up four in the first against Sweden and two against Finland. Six of the team's 11 goals have been tallied in the first. 

ON THE SCORESHEET

Five of the top point scorers of the tournament are from Team USA. Laila Edwards and Tessa Janecke lead the tournament with three goals and five points each. Sydney Morrow boasts five assists and Kirsten Simms has four assists in the tournament. Cassie Hall has three points (2G, 1A).

IN NET...

Against Finland, Ava McNaughton posted an 11-save shutout. It marked the U.S.' first shutout of Finland in this tournament since a 5-0 victory in the prelims of the 2010 tournament.
