EDMONTON, Alberta – Team USA (2-0-0-0) starts its first of back-to-back game days at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship this afternoon at Rogers Place, facing off against Austria (0-0-0-2) at 2 p.m. ET on NHL Network.

Team USA is unbeaten all-time against Austria and is looking for its fourth-straight win. The teams last go around was during Team USA’s journey towards its fifth gold-medal in 2021. The U.S. defeated Austria, 11-0, as Trevor Zegras led all players with four points, including two goals. Nine different players recorded multi-point games, while the U.S. powerplay scored twice on the man advantage.

The U.S. is coming off a 7-1 victory over Switzerland, which marks the first time the team has opened with two-straight wins since 2019. In Thursday’s game, Carter Mazur (Jackson, Mich.) scored twice while six U.S. players were credited with multi-point games en route to Team USA's win. Thomas Bordeleau (Houston, Texas), Luke Hughes (Canton, Mich.) and Mazur all recorded three points, with Mazur (2G, 1A) being named U.S. Player of the Game. Kaidan Mbereko (Aspen, Colo.) started in net for the U.S. again and stopped 23 shots in the victory.

Today’s Opponent: Austria

The U.S. National Junior Team has a 3-0-0-0-0 series record against Austria in the IIHF World Junior Championship. The two teams first met in 1981 where the U.S. came out on top, 7-2, in the relegation round. Twenty-three years went by before the two teams met again, this time in the preliminary round, where the U.S. topped Austria, 8-0. The team went a perfect 6-0-0-0 at the 2004 tournament and captured Team USA’s first World Juniors gold. The teams first matchup was the only time Austria has scored, as the U.S. has outscored the team, 19-0, since then.
