U.S. Claims Collegiate Series Finale With 2-1 Win

The U.S. Collegiate Women’s Select Team topped Canada, 2-1, in the rubber match of the 2022 Collegiate Series at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary on Saturday.

"Tonight's game prove this team's heart," Allison Coomey, 2022 U.S. Collegiate Women's Select Team head coach said. "Their willingness to block shots and clear pucks was impressive. It was a great way to end our series up here in Calgary."

An early U.S. penalty put Canada a skater up. Sophie Shirley then capitalized on the power-play opportunity, as Canada jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 15:22 left in the first.

A few minutes later in the period, the U.S. had its own power play, putting consistent offensive pressure on netminder Raygan Kirk, ultimately paying off as Nicole LaMantia (Wayne, Ill.) knotted the game at one 9:08 into the first. Team USA kept up the offensive pressure on a 5-on-3 extra skater opportunity immediately following the goal, but could not find the back of the net.

Abbey Murphy (Evergreen Park, Ill.) gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead late in the first, scooping up a rebound off an Anna Wilgren (Hudson, Wis.) booming shot from the stick-side point.

The middle stanza saw back-and-forth action, with multiple power play chances on both sides, but each team’s defense and goaltending held each other scoreless.

With 12:41 remaining in the third, a mishandled puck by the Canadian goaltender resulted in a turnover in the offensive zone, but the U.S. couldn’t put the puck in the open net to extend its lead. Less than two minutes later, Canada had a breakaway opportunity, followed by a 2-on-1 opportunity, but goaltender Abbey Levy (Congers, N.Y.) made two acrobatic saves to keep the game, 2-1.

Stellar defense and goaltending down the stretch sealed Team USA’s victory.

Goaltenders Amanda Thiele (Milford, Mich.) and Levy combined for a 33-save, one-goal performance in net in the deciding game.

With the victory, Team USA closes out the series 2-1 and give the U.S. it’s third-straight series win. Canada took game one, 4-3 in a shootout, with Team USA winning game two, 4-1.

U18 Select Team Drops Series Final To Canada, 7-2

The U.S. Under-18 Select Team closed out the 2022 Under-18 Series on Saturday, dropping a 7-2 decision to Canada at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary.

"Our team played hard tonight and we thought we had a little more offense than the previous nights," Katie Lachapelle, 2022-23 U.S. Under-18 Women's National Team head coach said. "Unfortunately we came up short. We have some work to do over the next few months and are ready for the challenge of doing that."

The first period did not lack offense as the two teams combined for five goals in the opening stanza.

Just 2:29 into the first period, Canada jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Mackenzie Alexander squirted one past U.S. goaltender Annelies Bergmann (Detroit, Mich.). The two teams then continued to trade chances in the early parts of the first, but Canada’s tally remained the only score. Ten minutes later, Jocelyn Amos snapped a rising shot from short range past Bergmann to extend Canada’s lead to 2-0.

After going on the power-play, Team USA got one back, when Anabella Fanale (Webster, N.Y.) took Elly Klepinger (Corcoran, Minn.) and Gabby Kim’s (Los Angeles, Calif.) pass and put it past the Canadian netminder to make the game 2-1.

Just seven seconds later, Canada responded, winning the faceoff and re-extended its lead to two, as Alexia Aubin deflected a centering pass behind Bergmann to make it 3-1.

With 2:31 remaining in the first, Samantha Taber (Tewksbury, Mass.) took a breakaway pass from the blue line, sneaking it through Hannah Clark’s five hole, cutting the lead to 3-2.

Team USA opened the second with an early power play, but as the final seconds expired Bergmann made a sprawling save on a breakaway to keep the game to a one-goal bout. Bergmann continued to make impressive saves as Canada kept the offensive pressure up.

Canada had 38 seconds of 5-on-3 at 9:28 in the second, but the U.S. penalty kill held strong killing off both penalties, and drawing a penalty of its own to go on the offensive.

Early in the third, Caitlin Kraemer deflected a point-blank shot into the back of the net, extended Team Canada’s lead to 4-2. On a U.S. turnover in its own zone, just two minutes later, Abby Stonehouse deked one in, to open a 5-2 lead. Layla Hemp (Chanhassen, Minn.) then entered the game in goal for the U.S.

Midway through the third Canada tallied another goal to open a 6-2 lead and with less than a minute left in the game, a Keira Hurry slapshot from the point found the back of the net to make it 7-2.

With the loss, Team USA closes out the series with a 0-3 record. Canada won game one, a 6-5 shootout victory and game two by a 4-0 decision.
