GAMEDAY: Team USA Set To Meet Canada in Gold Medal Game

U.S. looking to claim its first WWC since 2019

HERNING, Denmark – Team USA looks to bring home gold at the 2022 IIHF Women’s World Championship on Sunday, facing off against Canada in the gold medal game. Puck drop is slated for 7:30 p.m. local time, 1:30 p.m. ET, and can be viewed live on NHL Network. 

TODAY'S MATCHUP

Today's matchup against Canada marks the final game of the 2022 IIHF Women's World Championship, the gold medal game. The U.S. topped Czechia 10-1 in the semifinals to advance to the gold medal game. Team USA enters the GMG having outscored opponents at a 52 to 5 clip.

LAST TIME OUT

Amanda Kessel tallied four points (3G, 1A), while Taylor Heise posted a five-point evening (2G, 3A), as Team USA topped Czechia, 10-1, in the semifinals of the IIHF Women's World Championship. Hilary Knight added key goals as the U.S. used a six-goal first period to put its opponent away and advance to the gold medal game. Nicole Hensley made nine saves in net for Team USA in the victory. The U.S. outshot Czechia 39-10.

AGAINST CANADA...

In 31 Women's Worlds matchups, Team USA holds an 12-4-9-6 record against Canada, winning eight of the last 10 meetings between the two foes. Team USA beat Canada, 5-2, in the final preliminary-round game on Aug. 30. 

IN THE GOLD MEDAL GAME...

Team USA has reached the Women's Worlds gold medal games 21 consecutive times, playing in the final game each year the tournament has been staged. Of the previous 20 championship games, the U.S. has faced Canada all but once (Finland, 2019), holding an 8-11 record. Overall, Team USA has won gold nine times (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019), including eight of the last 10 Women's Worlds. 

HEISE'S BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE

In her first appearance as a member of the U.S. Women's National Team, Taylor Heise has recorded 18 points (7G, 11A) in six games at Women's Worlds. She leads the tournament in points, goals, and assists and has scored the most points in a single Women's Worlds since Cindy Curley recorded 23 in 1990. Additionally, she is one assist away from tying the single-tournament assist record, currently held by Curley as well.

HAT TRICKS

Taylor Heise and Hannah Bilka both recorded hat tricks against Hungary, while Amanda Kessel recorded a hat trick against Czechia. Prior to the tournament, the U.S. last registered a hat trick in the 2015 WWC semifinals.  

GOALS. 

Through six games, Team USA has scored 52 goals, reaching double-digits in three games; vs. Japan (10-0), vs. Hungary (12-1), vs. Czechia (10-1). The 52 goals marks the most by a single U.S. team since scoring 50 at the 1990 WWC.
