KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Alex Carpenter (North Reading, Mass.) scored late in the third period to give the U.S. a 2-1 victory in the second game of the 2022-23 Rivalry Series at the Sandman Centre on Thursday evening, as Team USA now heads back to the United States up 2-0 in the series.

“Tonight I thought we were very thorough from the beginning to the end and I’m really proud of the group,” said John Wroblewski (Neenah, Wis.), head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team Head Coach. “It’s so difficult to beat anybody two games in a row and to beat that federation twice in a row on their home ice is a daunting task and I’m really proud of our team.”

With the game knotted at 1-1 following back-and-forth action in the final frame, Carpenter put home a loose puck past Canada netminder Kristen Campbell’s outstretched pad to give Team USA the go-ahead goal with 6:36 remaining. Kelly Pannek (Plymouth, Minn.) sent a feed from the end boards up to Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho), who fired a shot that created the rebound in front for Carpenter.

HIGHLIGHTS

The score capped off two unanswered goals, after the U.S. had found themselves down 1-0 in the second period, despite generating momentum early on and holding Canada to just five shots on goal through the first 20 minutes.

Less than three minutes into the game, Team USA had the first scoring chance when Kelsey King (Elk River, Minn.) took a hard shot from the right slot that resulted in a rebound opportunity, but the U.S. was unable to capitalize.

The U.S. then received the first extra-skater opportunity of the evening, when Canada was called for a too-many-players penalty with 9:45 left in the first. Team USA registered two solid scoring chances but could not put the puck past Campbell, keeping the game scoreless.

With just over two minutes left in the first, Knight controlled a rebound and tipped a backhand shot in front of the net, but Campbell gloved it to keep it 0-0.

The U.S. closed out the first period strong, killing off Canada’s first power-play opportunity of the game.

Early in the second, U.S. goalie Maddie Rooney (Andover, Minn.) made a pair of standout saves off Canadian odd-skater rushes as the contest remained scoreless through the first half of the second.

Canada opened the scoring with 1:42 remaining in the middle frame. Laura Stacey caught a breakaway pass up the middle and was hooked as she drew closer to goal, drawing a penalty shot for interference, which was taken by Canada’s Marie-Philip Poulin. On Poulin’s attempt, she flipped in a backhander for the 1-0 lead.

Just 1:12 later, Team USA knotted the game at one when Kendall Coyne Schofield (Palos Heights, Ill.) tipped home a point shot from Rory Guilday (Minnetonka, Minn.) that snuck through the five-hole. Savannah Harmon (Downers Grove, Ill.) also picked up an assist on the score with a feed over to Guilday inside the blue line.
