Team USA win 2022 Para Hockey Cup Championship.

BRIDGEWATER, Nova Scotia – Brody Roybal (Northlake, Ill.) scored three times and Declan Farmer (Tampa, Fla.) added two goals to lead the U.S. National Sled Team to a 5-1 victory against Canada here today in the championship game of the 2022 Para Hockey Cup at Lunenburg County Lifestyle Centre. It was the seventh straight Para Hockey Cup championship for Team USA and ninth overall.

“We were relentless all game and it really paid off in the third period,” said David Hoff (Bottineau, N.D.), head coach of the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team. “Our depth really helped us play strong for the full 45 minutes, and I’m really proud of these guys for playing hard all game.”

The U.S. was shorthanded less than two minutes into the game but netminder Jen Lee (San Francisco, Calif.) kept the hosts off the board with two key glove saves during the man advantage. Ben Musselman (Amelia, Ohio) had a good scoring chance mid-way through the period but could not convert. Lee kept the game scoreless with an acrobatic save during Canada’s second power play of the game shortly after Musselman’s chance. Royal wristed home the game’s first goal, beating Canadian netminder Jean-Francoise Huneault from the right circle while on the man advantage with 2:15 left in the opening period. Jack Wallace (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and Farmer picked up assists on Roybal’s fourth tally of the tournament.

Lee came up big for the U.S. once again to open the second period, sliding across the crease to stop a two-on-one opportunity less than a minute into the middle frame. Team USA had two power plays in the stanza and generated numerous scoring chances, but could not solve Huneault.

Roybal extended the U.S. lead with his second goal of the game 1:43 into the third frame, propelling himself past multiple Canadian defenders along the right side of the ice before scoring on a low shot to the far side. Farmer then scored twice in a :36 span to give the U.S. a comfortable 4-0 advantage. His first tally came after a steal of the puck at 9:19 at the left circle and he finished from the top of the crease. His second was fired in at 9:55 after Evan Nichols forced a turnover. Roybal completed his hat trick with just 2:13 to play when he wristed one into the top corner from in tight. Canada pulled its netminder in the final minute and Adam Dixon broke the shutout with :30 left.

NOTES: The U.S. outshot Canada 26-10 … The U.S. was 1-3 on the power play, while Canada was 0-3 … The U.S. finished the 2022 Para Hockey Cup with a 4-1-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record.
