GAME DAY: Team USA Lines Up Against Canada at U18 Women’s Worlds

Final Preliminary Game Set for 2 p.m. ET on NHL Network

 

ÖSTERSUND, Sweden – The 2023 U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team wraps uppreliminary-round play at the IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship on Wednesday, facing off against rival Canada.  

Puck drop is set for 2 p.m. ET and can be viewed live on NHL Network. 

TODAY'S MATCHUP

Today's meeting marks the final preliminary-round game for Team USA at the IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship. The team currently sits at 2-0-0-0 in the tournament, with a plus 10 goal differential, the highest of the championship. Team USA beat Sweden, 6-3, in its first game and topped Finland, 8-1 in its second. 

LAST TIME OUT

Behind five points (3G, 2A) from Maggie Scannell, the U.S. topped Finland, 8-1 in the second preliminary-round game of the 2023 IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship. Heading into the second period up just 2-1, the U.S. posted three goals in the second and third, while also converting on 3-of-4 power play opportunities. Layla Hemp made 19 saves in the victory.

ALL-TIME VS. CANADA

In 21 all-time meetings, the U.S. holds an 8-5-4-4 record against Canada at the IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship, outscoring its rival 61-44. Against Canada in the preliminary round, the U.S. holds a 5-2 advantage. 

SUPER SCANNELL

Forward Maggie Scannell has recorded seven points (4G, 3A) through two games. It ties her for the most points in the tournament, boasting a plus-four goal differential as well. Scannell tallied five points (3G, 2A) against Finland, including her first career international hat trick.

POWER PLAY SUCCESS

The U.S. is converting on 60 percent of its extra-skater opportunities throughout the tournament thus far. On 10 power plays, they have scored six times, the highest clip in the tournament. Against Finland, the U.S. went 3-4 on the power play.
