GAME DAY: U.S. Faces Finland On Sunday In Bronze Medal Game

ÖSTERSUND, Sweden – The 2023 U.S. Under-18 Women’s National Team is set to play for a medal on Sunday, facing off against Finland at the IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Championship. 

Puck drop is set for 10 a.m. ET and can be viewed live on NHL Network. 

TODAY'S MATCHUP

Today's game marks the bronze medal game for Team USA at the IIHF Under-18 Women's World Championship. Despite earning a quarterfinal bye, the U.S. fell to host Sweden, 2-1, in the semifinals, to take a spot in the bronze medal game. Team USA will face Finland in the game. 

LAST TIME OUT

Despite a 25-save performance from goaltender Annelies Bergmann, the U.S. fell in its semifinal meeting against Sweden, 2-1. Lucia DiGirolamo recorded the U.S.' lone goal in the first period, as Sweden posted two unanswered scores in the middle frame to earn the victory. Team USA out shot Sweden 38-27. It marked the U.S.' first loss in the semifinals in championship history.

LAST TIME AGAINST FINLAND

The U.S. last met Finland on Jan. 9 in the second game of the preliminary round at this year's championship. Team USA won the game, 8-1. Maggie Scannell recorded five points (3G, 2A), recording her first career hat trick, to lead the U.S. to victory. 

IN MEDAL GAMES...

Today marks the first time in championship history that the U.S. will be skating in the bronze medal game. The U.S. is 8-6 all-time in medal games at the tournament, having made the gold medal game in all previous 14 championships. .

THREE BEST PLAYERS 

Annelies Bergmann, Joy Dunne and Maggie Scannell were named the IIHF three best players of the tournament.
