COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The U.S. Men’s Development Sled Hockey Team went 3-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) in its three-game series against Canada last weekend at Howie-Morenz Arena in Montreal. Kyle Zych (South Hadley, Mass.) led the U.S. with a series-high four goals and five points, while Jacob Jones paced the team with four assists. In goal, Kyle Huckaby (Port Arthur, Texas) recorded two shutouts, while Taggart VanderMolen (Fruitport, Mich.) had one.
The U.S. won the opening game of the series 3-0 on Thursday (April 27). Kane Goodman (Andover, Mass.) got the scoring underway in the second period off a feed from Brendan Cormier (Westport, Mass.). Goodman then assisted on a Zych goal to give the U.S. a 2-0 lead, and Zych tallied his second with under two minutes remaining in the contest off an assist from Jones to account for the 3-0 final. Huckaby recorded the shutout.
In game two on Friday (April 28), the U.S. skated to a 5-0 victory. Zych got the U.S. out to an early lead, scoring his third goal of the tournament just 1:06 into the first, and tallied again in the second period to put the U.S. up 2-0. Erik Knotts (Willoughby, Ohio), Liam Cunningham (River Falls, Wis.), and Nick Witkowski (Land O Lakes, Fla.) all added goals in the middle frame to help Team USA to the win. VanderMolen picked up the win in goal.
Team USA completed the sweep with a 2-0 win on Sunday (April 29). Cormier broke a scoreless tie early in the second period with assists from Zych and Daniel Malloy (Bowie, Md.). Tyler Shepersky (Menahga, Minn.) gave the U.S. a two-goal lead later on in the period with assists from Jones and Cormier. Huckaby earned his second shutout of the series.
