GAME DAY | U.S. To Face Hungary Sunday at Men’s Worlds

Opening faceoff set for 5:20 a.m. ET live on NHL Network

TAMPERE, Finland – The U.S. Men’s National Team continues play in the 2023 IIHF Men’s World Championship here Sunday (May 14) against Hungary in what is the second of seven preliminary round games in the tournament. Opening faceoff is set for 12:20 p.m. local/5:20 a.m. ET at Nokia Arena. All U.S. games in the world championship can be seen live in the U.S. on NHL Network.

Team USA is coming off an impressive 4-1 victory over host and defending gold-medalist Finland to open the tournament on Friday (May 12), led by two goals from alternate captain Alex Tuch, a goal and two assists from Drew O’Connor and 23 saves from U.S. Player of the Game Casey DeSmith.

Hungary opened play in the world championship this afternoon (May 13) and suffered a 3-1 defeat to Denmark.

Team USA and Hungary will meet for just the third time ever in the world championship, with the last engagement coming on May 13, 2016, when the U.S. earned a 5-1 win in the preliminary round. The only other contest between the two squads came on Feb. 7, 1939, with the U.S. gaining a 3-0 preliminary round victory.

The U.S. had a short, up-tempo skate Saturday (May 13) at the practice rink that is part of the Nokia Arena complex where games in the tournament are being played. 

Team USA will be without forward Sammy Walker who suffered a tournament-ending injury in Friday’s game vs. Finland and has returned to the U.S.
