The U.S. National Sled Hockey Team beat Canada 6-1 to capture the gold medal at the 2023 World Para Ice Hockey Championship Sunday night at the Moose Jaw Events Centre, claiming its sixth World Championship gold medal. 

The U.S. finished the tournament with a 5-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record and an unbeaten 16-2-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) 2022-23 season record. Team USA has now won the last three consecutive World Para Ice Hockey Championship (2023, 2021, 2019).

MOOSE JAW, Sask. – Declan Farmer (Tampa, Fla.) and Brody Roybal (Northlake, Ill.)tallied hat tricks while Malik Jones (Aurora, Colo.) scored twice, as the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team defeated China 10-2 in the 2023 World Para Ice Hockey Championship semifinals at the Moose Jaw Events Centre on Saturday.

Team USA will play Canada in the gold medal game Sunday at 9:00 p.m. ET. The gold medal game will be live streamed on the Paralympics YouTube and Facebook page.

Friday was a day of rest and recovery for the U.S. as the team geared up for the semifinal round on Saturday. Players spent time with friends and family, popped into shops around Moose Jaw, and enjoyed the hotel pool between team meals.

The team staff took a tour of the Tunnels of Moose Jaw, which, according to urban legend, were used by infamous gangster Al Capone during the Prohibition era.

After thoroughly enjoying the immersive experience beneath the city, some players and staff ventured to the arena to watch the quarterfinal round games. Czechia beat Italy 4-0, then China won 7-2 against Korea, which meant the U.S. would be playing China on Saturday in the semifinal round.

Thursday marked the final day of practice for Team USA in Moose Jaw, with a day of rest scheduled for Friday before the semifinal round on Saturday. After a morning spent enjoying the warm weather downtown, thunderstorms rolled in just as the team arrived at the arena for practice. Players and staff enjoyed snacks from Tim Hortons before a high-energy practice.

The International Paralympic Committee and tournament hosts planned dinner for all eight teams away from the arena Thursday night at various restaurants in the local community. The U.S. went to The Mad Greek for dinner, enjoying the restaurants famous Greek ribs along with chicken skewers, baklava, and other delectable dishes.

Brody Roybal, Jack Wallace, and Travis Dodson all scored, and Jen Lee recorded a shutout as the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team defeated Canada 3-0 in its final preliminary round game of the 2023 World Para Ice Hockey Championship in front of a packed crowd at the Moose Jaw Events Centre. The win gave the U.S. a 3-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record to close out preliminary round play, and Roybal was named U.S. Player of the Game.

Following the big win in enemy territory, the team enjoyed a post-game meal of steak and grilled peppers back at the hotel as players discussed whether or not they enjoy the show Ted Lasso.

Declan Farmer recorded a hat trick and Griffin LaMarre picked up a shutout as the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team beat Korea 9-0 in its second preliminary round game of the 2023 World Para Ice Hockey Championship to move to 2-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) on the tournament. Equipment manager Jake Visser ensured LaMarre got a puck from his shutout performance in his World Championship debut.

Tuesday marked a special day for Brandon Adam as well, as he made his U.S. National Sled Hockey team debut. Brett Bolton also saw his first game action of the tournament. 

After the game, players enjoyed a team meal at Mitsu Sweet café & Sushi in downtown Moose Jaw.

Travis Dodson (Deming, N.M.) scored his first career hat trick while Kevin McKee (Davenport, Iowa) tallied three assists as the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team opened its World Para Ice Hockey Championship campaign with a 7-1 win over Czechia. 

After the game, head coach David Hoff (Bottineau, N.D.) noted that Dodson, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, earned Player of the Game honors on Memorial Day in the U.S.

Declan Farmer (Tampa, Fla.) collected a goal and an assist in the contest, reaching a new career milestone becoming the first ever U.S. National Sled Hockey Team Player to reach 250 career points, extending his team record.

The U.S. National Sled Hockey Team enjoyed an off day on the eve of its opening game of the 2023 World Para Ice Hockey Championship against Czechia, starting the day with a team stretch after breakfast, led by athletic trainer Mike Cortese. 

Several players staff took advantage of the afternoon off, exploring downtown Moose Jaw and enjoying the warm, sunny day after a couple days of rain. 

After lunch in the afternoon, players and staff took a bus to Showtime at Galaxy Cinemas in Moose Jaw to go see Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3. Some were more enthusiastic about the movie choice than others, particularly Brody Roybal, who was going to see the “hilarious” movie for the fourth time since it released in late April. With nearly all 17 players, as well as a few staff members, ordering a large popcorn for the flick, the Galaxy Cinemas popcorn machine nearly got cleaned out twice, but the staff members were able to have everyone supplied with snacks with time to spare for the movie.

Following breakfast at the hotel, Team USA explored downtown Moose Jaw on Saturday morning, and the players gathered in a coffee shop one block away from the team hotel, where chess battles took place while they enjoyed coffee and croissants, which happens to be the favorite meal of Evan Nichols. 

Following lunch at the arena, the players prepared to take the ice for practice in the late afternoon, with players and staff alike remarking at noticeable improvements from the day prior after shaking some rust off and making need sled adjustments with the assistance of equipment manager Jake Visser and athletic trainer Mike Cortese. Players and coaches from several different nations packed the stands and tunnels to watch Team USA’s skate before dinner at the arena.

Thanks to a later-than-usual start time for Team USA’s opening practice of the tournament, the players and staff took advantage of the opportunity to sleep in before 9:30 a.m. breakfast on Friday morning, followed by an afternoon of rest before 12:45 p.m. lunch at the arena.

The players returned to Moose Jaw Events Centre in the evening for classification and equipment checks before practice. Several players, including Travis Dodson, took in an exhibition game between Germany and Korea from the stands and the tunnel as Team USA waited to take the ice. A benefit of staying just a quarter mile from the arena is the opportunity for players and staff to watch other games throughout the week with ease during downtime. 

At 5:15 p.m., players and staff posed for a team photo at center ice before the coaches broke out the pucks for the team’s first practice of the tournament, which was an hour-long, high-energy session after two long days of travel. Players from China and Italy populated the red seats of the Moose Jaw Events Centre, looking on as the U.S. worked some rust off in its first practice as a full team since a late-April training camp in Madison, Wisconsin.

Brody Roybal walked USA Hockey’s content coordinator Brianna Rhone through the different parts of his sled and sticks for a “Gear Talk” segment after practice, and the team ventured through the arena tunnels to dinner, where captain Josh Pauls was pleasantly surprised by the Thanksgiving turkey dinner buffet options.

Following a team breakfast Thursday morning, several players returned to North Hill Bowl to try and take down Kevin McKee and his elusive high score of 180. Players and staff gathered for lunch at 12:00 p.m., and soon after, loaded up the bus for the 270-mile trek to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

After a smooth five-hour bus ride and border crossing into Canada thanks to Craig the bus driver, the team arrived in downtown Moose Jaw, where players and staff checked into their hotel rooms before unloading equipment around the corner at the Moose Jaw Events Centre, home of the 2023 World Para Ice Hockey Championship. Local youth hockey players served as volunteers for the day, helping teams unload gear and set up locker rooms throughout the afternoon upon arrival.

After getting the locker room prepped for the busy days ahead, the team had dinner at the arena along with the seven other squads competing in the World Championship, and friendly greetings were exchanged as players enjoyed the chicken and bacon soup, spring rolls, salad bar, and buffet-style beef and chicken with rice.

Players and staff for the U.S. National Sled Team arrived in Minot, North Dakota, on Wednesday (May 24) throughout the morning and afternoon, ahead of the team’s bus ride to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, on Thursday. Head coach David Hoff’s family provided a warm welcome for the team, and transported players, suitcases, and hockey gear from Minot International Airport to the hotel.

The players to arrive earliest in Minot on Wednesday were able to find ice time at Meysa Arena, home of the NAHL’s Minot Minotauros, thanks to the connections of North Dakota native Chris Douglas. Later in the day, several members of the team ventured to North Hill Bowl, where Kevin McKee proved to be a savant, bowling an alleged high score of 180.
