SUMMERSIDE, Prince Edward Island - U.S. player of the game Richard Gallant (Concord, Mass.) scored two goals and Cullen Potter (Minneapolis, Minn.) notched one in the shootout, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team suffered its first loss of the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in a shootout to Canada White. Despite the loss, the U17s pick up a point to clinch the top spot in the tournament standings with ten points and a 3-0-1-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record.

Canada White's Émile Guité was the first to score, going off the post and in on the power play 8:11 into the matchup. Charlie Trethewey (Woodbine, Md.) found the equalizer 1:34 later after Will Belle (Minnetonka, Minn.) drew a penalty.

Drew Schock (Green Bay, Wis.) sent the puck to Potter at the point along the left wing, and Potter found Charlie Trethewey (Woodbine, Md.) with a pass along the blue line. Trethewey sent a wrister five-hole to even the score with a power-play marker.

Gallant gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead just over a minute and a half later. Will Moore (Ithaca, N.Y.) stole the puck off a Canadian defender's stick along the boards and fed it to Gallant, who came flying into the slot for his first goal of the night.

Gallant added a third to the U.S. tally with 9:20 to play, picking up the puck in the U.S. zone off a wrister that went wide, skating up the right wing and going forehand-backhand from the goal line.

Blake Fiddler made it a 3-2 game 2:06 into the third period, scoring from the point through traffic, then Cole Temple tied it with a redirect on a Canada White power play to send the game into overtime.

After a scoreless five minutes of three-on-three hockey, the game headed to a shootout. Potter scored for the U.S. in the shootout, but Canada White took the game in the fourth round.

The U17s continue preliminary round play in the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge tomorrow (Nov. 7) against Canada Red. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m. ET at the Eastlink Centre and can be streamed live here.
